Video Dental shop

Hi VS folks,

Has anyone done a Dental shop? I am doing one soon after I make the initial new patient appointment. This will be my first VS with this company. Want to make a great impression. I read the guidelines, but would like some feedback on what you found challenging during the shop. The great thing is no out of pocket expense. Thanks who all reply. (I've done new home shops only)

I did this in November. Not much for you to do except aim the cam when you are not actually in the dental chair. You will need the big battery; my shop lasted 2+ hour. I got a ton of work and many $$$$ worth of x-rays.

Poor customer service? Don't get mad; get video.
I did one about a month ago. I didn't find it challenging because I just shared the truth about my background. It was the best cleaning I've ever gotten from a dentist's office, too. To be paid in addition to receiving that was icing on the cake.

I have one in January. At first I thought it was for a cleaning, but it's something else. It really is a relief since I'm such a baby in the dentist's chair and wouldn't want all that whining documented for posteritywinking smiley

Off topic but a quick comment. I have had a ton of work done at a local dental school. The quality has been as good or better than any dentist I have patronized and the cost is of course much less. The only negative is that the pace is slower.
Ms. Gail, are you a video shopper?

Unfortunately, I've only seen these as video shops. If there are any done as a traditional shop someone might be able to give you some direction. If you're interested in video shopping you need to use the search function here and on Volition.com to find out more about it. You will be able to find information on any companies that loan equipment (some do, some don't), how and where to purchase your own and information on training through Undercover Essentials.

Thanks Lisa, I will try and find the companies that do dental shops, especially if someone can point me in a direction.
LisaSTL,

Mine is January 4th. I'll private you and let you know how it goes. I get regular cleanings, but look forward to trying a new dentist. I like that the shop is very close to where I live. Hope to do well, I've heard great things about this company.

Wish I could say mine was close by! Good news is the fee is a heck of a lot more than what I was offered in September for the same type of shop in the same area. In reality it can be done in one day or used as a great start for putting together a routesmiling smiley

Same here. I was so glad to see this come up.

I had a dental shop two weeks ago. It was a good experience and I really needed a cleaning since my last cleaning had been in January. When I handed the voucher to the receptionist at the end she was shocked that I was a shopper. It was quite funny.
Same with mine! She said she never would have guessed it was me, because I acted nervous and apprehensive (I wasn't at all). I said I guess I did my job!
Are you looking for dental shops done as a traditional shop? You may want to start a thread since everyone here is responding to the video shops. In 7 years I've never seen one, but that doesn't mean they don't exist.

There are a number of shopping companies you can register with who have video shops. Measure Consumer Perspectives, Shadow Agency, Clear Evaluations, EPMS and Intellishop come to mind. Video shops are not usually posted like others. After registering you may want to contact them. I went the other route and bought my own rig and then attended the Undercover Essential workshop. Part of the value in the seminar was video shopping companies are supplied a list of shoppers who have completed the seminar and they contacted me.

Can anyone else weigh in on this subject? I thought Tech and Roel went the same route as me, but I'm often wrongwinking smiley

That's the same path I took. I bought the equipment first, then registered for the workshop.

I also registered with Video Shopping Network website at [videoshoppingnetwork.org] before I took the class, just to hang around and learn. I got in touch with a couple of schedulers through that site and told them I had equipment coming. Before it even hit my doorstep, I had a company scheduling me for work.

With those jobs, I was able to pay for my gas going to and from the workshop, plus pay two nights at a hotel. I did three or four shops while I was in the Cleveland area for the workshop, too.

I've gotten more work from different companies since taking the workshop and I learned *so* much, especially about how to shorten shops while still getting the interactions the clients need.

For those who can travel a bit outside their home area, there is work! smiling smiley
"a bit outside their home area." Now that's an understatement, LOL!

I concur with LisaSTL. The best route is to get Video Certified by Carrie Porhammer,so you know how to operate the buttom cam and get a feel for it. Each company has a certain requirement when sending videos to them. The next step is buying the equipment. The price is reasonable, and you can make your money back by doing four or five video shops. The cost is $420 through MCP. Some companies will allow you to borrow their equipment. Carrie does provide a list of VC's in class. They will also contact you by phone/email.

Doing video is fun, but uploading video is another hurdle. That is another expense required as companies want their video ASAP. You need a decent computer with either a hard wired cable or wireless router. Each 1/2 hour of video is 1 gig. Most shops are one hour to one and a half hour long. Check with your cable company on uploading video. You also need to get larger memory cards (minimum 8 gigs),an extra buttom cam and extended battery. The out of pocket expense is $$.

You will break even and make money eventually. I did after two months of doing regular shops plus video shops (I work full-time also).

Thanks for the info. I'm joining the Video Shopping Network and will observe for a bit ;-)
I think sometimes people see the big numbers on video shops and don't realize all we go through and how expenses can be greater than for traditional shopping. I've been lucky enough to have expenses covered on a couple of trips, but I still had to put out the funds initially and on my other trips expenses were my responsibility. With greater reward also comes greater risk. I had an equipment failure on a trip which cost the fee from one job and forced me to spend another night out of town, essentially eating up the fee from yet another so I made a few bucks on the trip, but not enough to justify a couple of days. On another trip there was a failure which cost me one job and I was not sure if it was the camera or the battery. Luckily it was just the battery so I didn't lose the remaining 2 shops on the trip! While I love it there is also more pressure with the scenarios and getting everything right.

Ms.Gail, VSN is a great resource. Make sure to check out the message board. Very good information. All the technical stuff you need to know are there. Use this forum and talk to people like LisaSTL, Walesmaven, TechSavvy, prettygurl they are very helpful. On Volition.com do a "search" for Video equipment and read, read, read. :-)

LisaSTL: hope to see you in Chicago, waiting for flights to go down.

With respect to the video dental shops.... they have been the bane of many a v-shopping company for a year. They must be on their 4th or 5th company. So, just sign up with all the v-shopping companies, train, buy your equipment, and they will show up somewhere at a job board near you.

I noticed a new company had the latest round. It pays a lot better than the first one I did for another MSC. Must be a real kick in the teeth for the MSC's, if you'll pardon the expression. winking smiley

Wish I had some x-rays that were current, but not too current. I have turned down one other dentist shop because I don't want to be zapped with the x-rays too much. I'd rather not be the first shopper to glow in the dark.

Ms. Gail do a search for Carrie Porhammer and speak to her. She does the training and is very resourceful. Before I took the class/bought equipment, I spoke with some folks at the companies. After talking to them I learned a lot. I would be intetested to know who does the video dental as well.
