Do You Use Stopwatches for Restaurant Shops ?

I haven't done restaurant shops because of the numerous exact timing issues, even to the second, although I have done other kind of shops requiring timing.

How do most of you handle this?

I take my smartphone and put the stopwatch on. As they do each step I just press 'lap' and it records all the times.
Thanks JP.

I don't have a smartphone. I have a blackberry but I've never noticed if it
gives me seconds.
I note the time to the second for each event during the visit and dictate the time to my DVR with what the time was for. I may need to remember a time for up to a minute while the server deals with our table, though if I see her coming will murmer to my microphone the time just before she arrives, adding a second.
a blackberry is a smartphone and you can download a stopwatch app on it......

Tech,

I have an old Blackberry Pearl with T Mobile.

I've never noticed a stopwatch on it.
I just put my personal digital recorder in my bra, sit back and enjoy the meal. When I get home, all the conversation and timings to the seconds are just a playback away.

LOL Murphy,

I have a couple of friends who carry their cell phone in their bras - of course one has to be rather well endowed to get away with that grinning smiley
I use a stopwatch but even if you don't own a smartphone, you may still have the stopwatch feature on your basic cell phone. Set it to lap feature to record all timings accurately.
My iPod touch has a stopwatch. I have one earbud in and I pretend to turn it off to listen when I am actually doing the lap times.

Okay thanks. I'll take a look at it and see if I can find a stopwatch function.
you should be able to download the stop watch app from blackberry app world on the phone, even if it's an older one. Unless older means over 5 years.

I use the stopwatch app on my droid. I pretend to be texting when I arrive and while I'm ordering then leave it running to be sure I spend the necessary 15 minutes inside after receiving my order.
I have an extremely dumb phone which has a stopwatch function. I would suggest in terms of seconds, just be as close as you can without being too obvious. I have never been called on times.
Hey guys!

I do a lot of restaurant shops. While I rarely have to do it down to the second (This sounds like fast food), I can share with you how I do it. I made a google voice number. I text that google voice number when things happen. I'll just say "Drink" "order" "entree" etc. Then I go onto google voice, copy/paste it,and I have my notes time stamped in order.
Oh, no.... from one well endowed shopper who tried that and lost the entire recording when the endowment turned off the recorder. Never again. It took a few shops before I realized what was happening. I thought my recorder was on the fritz. But alas it was just on the boob.

To those folks who use an iPhone stopwatch to record time stamps: Aren't you worried about having cover blown? The iPhone's stopwatch app is pretty conspicuous and at a restaurant where there are servers, a manager, wine stewards, runners, etc. all around you at all times, I think someone would notice.

Personally, I send myself short text messages that say "drink order taken," "drink served," "entree cleared." But even that makes me worried because on all the literature from my MSC, they say not to use a phone more than once or twice during the course of the meal.

P.S.

The "once or twice" rule seems ridiculous to me, since when I go out to eat and I'm not working--even at a very nice restaurant--I'm frequently texting, tweeting about the meal, taking pictures, etc.

My timer is so large on my phone, I think it would be noticed. Do you just hold it under the table and tap? I never noticed that the lap feature would let you add different times. That's because my smart phone is still smarter than me. LOL I think texting may be less noticeable. I try to make sure I have my back to the wall and I scoot into the corner so no one can see. If I could remember what each lap was for, that would be great.
I always text under the table, bar, etc. And I don't have a smart phone, so the screen is smaller and very hard to read the screen.
I have my Android and record the entire shop on my phone. However, if I do a McDonald's or Arby's they reqire a stop watch, then I use my digital on my Android with a split timer. But, restaurants are pretty easy. You should be fine.
I have a "timer's" watch from a swim shop. I click it when I start, and I can click up to 6 events from there, and it tells me the elapsed time. You do have to know the time you started, and it tells you the intervals.
checked out the blackberry I have

tried to get it to show seconds - nope, no seconds

On top of that I rarely use it purposely. Dont give our number -

and now I notice it's losing time..I recharge it and reset it
but its now 11:28 AM and watch is saying 11:25.

Had wrong date and wrong time when I went to reset it....course I have dropped it a couple of times..maybe it just needs a whole new battery ?

anyway this isnt going to do it for me.

I need a cheapo watch with a stop function.

Amy idea where I could get that
I am amazed at how many people use their smartphones at the dinner table. I am not at all hesitant to text my notes throughout a meal. As for timing, I either use the stopwatch on my smartphone or my Timex watch.
Yeah, I know, I remember when cell phones didn't have that capability and I had to use a recored (still have it) doing Disneyland shops. I would do up to 10 shops a day without a cell phone to record or text my notes. I either used my recorder or used my memory, which after each shop, I would sit down and then write down my notes...That was crazy...lol but we did it. I'm so glad times are a little easier.

That's what I do, too. No need to click a stopwatch button or mention the time into the mic.
