meetup.com - a way to battle MS isolation

Hello all,

A while back I posted a thread asking how my fellow MSers battle the social isolation that comes with this job, especially if you are like me and (a) a frequent route shopper and (b) a little on the extrovert side.

Last month I discovered meetup.com - it's a free site dedicated to helping people with similar interests meet. I've joined a bi-monthly lunch group for home-based businesspeople, a workout/fitness group for women 40+, and will probably join a book club as well.

Have any of you tried this? I've noticed that there are some groups dedicated to "Mystery Shoppers" in metropolitan areas as well....

I joined a couple of networking groups when I was in insurance and the local chamber of commerce and still keep in touch with some of the members.

The networking groups are not free that I joined.

There is also toastmasters which teaches people to do public speaking and mastermind groups.

And there is always volunteer opportunities to socialize as well.

I would be leary of joining a mystery shopping group with a bunch of people I do not know--that is just me, though.

Most of the people I still keep in touch with from these groups do not know I mystery shop. I just go to the seminars to learn about stuff and socialize.

I joined one for people who want to meet up for happy hour. It is quite enjoyable because most people tend to let their guard down after a few drinks and it keeps the conversation going. My friend joined one for engineers in houston and she said that it was such a bore.
I met shoppers in person years ago and found the experience to be more negative than positive. I was looking for friends and colleagues. They were looking for ways to take from me. No more.

I don't feel isolated anyway. I'm fine with online forums.
I run a women's soccer pick up group on meet up. If any of you live in West LA (that's Los Angeles for any of you living in or near Louisiana) and are interested in playing soccer with us, let me know. Or just join and come without telling me you shop! West LA Women's Pick Up soccer. We are open to all women age 18 and above and all level of play, beginners to whatever. The fee is $10 for 6 mos.
It is a great way to run off the stress of shopping and the calories of all those ff meals.
I thought that was humorous about the engineers being boring as I have a few close relatives who are engineers. Dry sense of humor those guys....I did meet one really social engineer...

Missy,

Thanks much for the website. I visited this afternoon and joined a local club of those who enjoy speaking in French and discovered another that is geared toward the social aspect of fitness.
