$75 for a hotel shop--good, bad, average?

I have a chance to do a hotel shop not far from here, but....

It seems like a helluva lot of work for $75, and it looks as if I have to be "solo." If I could bring my spouse, I'd be thrilled with a free stay and $75 pay. And he is SO good with observations--always a great help when he comes with me on a shop.

Never done a hotel shop before--no way to judge if this is a "good" shop or not. Is this about what they pay for a nice, but not super upscale, hotel in a small urban area?

I think I'd do it for $100--are these ever bonused? If it stays on the board awhile, would it be "unseemly" for me to e-mail the scheduler and ask for an extra $25? I've bargained up a distance bonus before, but don't know protocol as to asking for a bonus on an unbonused shop....

TIA!

That's actually quite a nice fee for a hotel shop in the mid-range quality hotels. Be sure to join the rewards progrm and start accruing rewards points. Free hotel stays are one of the big reasons that people do a lot of hotel shops.

There is no protocol nor is it unseemly. You are a business person they are business people. Make your offer and they can either accept it or reject it. Regardless, don't take it personally. Ask if your interpretation of the "solo" requirement is correct and if that is negotiable.

The most I've been paid for a hotel shop is $15.00 over the reimbursement.

Only did them because I needed a hotel room that night.

Now they've gone to a different MSC and are reimbursement only. And the one I could have used got taken any way.

They aren't that much work but still, I'd sure rather get $75.00
$75 is a good fee. However, I just saw those shops posted and I will not take them due to the 1 shopper requirement. WHAT? They don't want to feed two people?

I've done a number of hotel shops. Some of them 5 star resort locations. $125 is the highest I've ever gotten and that's for a 3 day with multiple meals and a spa. But mostly rates are around $50 so I'd say you are doing well. Thing is, hotels don't generally stay on the boards very long.

Yes, a LOT of work over a short period. Especially when your have to hide everything related to the gig during the stay in case someone suspects.

Sometimes really worth the work. Sometimes not so much. A one night stay with one or two meals is just about perfect especially when close to home.

Have fun!
Thanks, everyone! See, I didn't know if this was good or not, so it's nice to know that it's a fair deal.

And, if I were able to take my husband, I wouldn't expect the MSC to buy his meals, too. Being that this place is so close to home, it would be a more believable scenario that we're having a "getaway" weekend. But it would be tough to pretend I was a solo traveler on business or visiting family in the area 'cuz I live only 20 miles away....

Now, if only I could find a time when I'm not working my other jobs this month!

I've never heard of the solo requirement. Seems odd. Like the others suggested I would email them and clarify that.

Thank you, jp! If my calendar is free for the date(s) needed, I'll do that!

I think that is a good fee, I wouldn't push it, someone will take it (I would). Why is it for one only, usually hotels are for two.

I think $75 is a somewhat average fee for a hotel if it involves a narrative.

Fees are generally negotiable but the ability to negotiate a higher fee would be most impacted by (A) your experience with hotel shops and (cool smiley the difficulty of scheduling the shop.

If an evaluator has a good track record of turning in flawless reports, then the MSC knows they will save money on the editorial side and can offer a larger fee. If you have no hotel experience, it would probably have to be a case where they had no other options for shoppers.

as far as the solo request goes; sometimes hotels that have a lot of solo business travelers will request a solo shopper. A couple checking in would look suspicious in that case.

The hotel staff doesn't always ask, but when I've done solo shops near my house, I just say my husband gave me a hotel stay for a bit of r & r away from the household for a night. Or that I was having my house fumigated and needed to be out of it overnight.

I wouldn't think the clerk would actually ask why your alone, woman travel alone on business or a getaway.

Live consciously....
I suppose the chances of a desk clerk asking "what" I was staying there for might be rare, but I have had clerks at check-in, in trying to just make friendly conversation, ask what I was in town for....

I think I have to work the weekend they want this done, so it's probably not gonna happen this time, but maybe next time around....

SteveSoCal, I've never done a hotel shop for this company, but all reports for them have been given a 10/10 and all involved narratives. But, if $75 is a good fee, I could probably do one at that, then if they like it, maybe I could negotiate a "raise" next time--LOL!

Thanks, all, for the great feedback on this. If I don't have to work, maybe I'll see if I can get this shop this month....

I do a lot of hotel shops and some FDA and Bell are suppose to ask where you are from and if you're there for business or leisure. I have shopped hotels with zero fee to $350 for 2 nights. $75 is consider average. Bare (not naming the hotel) recently posted hotels for one shopper only. I have never seen another msc doing that in 8 years of shopping hotels. The msc usually allow one or two, and some will allow children. A few required children (the ones near Disney).

I work for Oculus Training (www.oculustraining.com) and we generally pay somewhere between $75.00 and $100.00 for each night of a mystery shop in a hotel. We general include meals, hotel costs, mileage also.

Obviously there are a variety of forms that need to be completed. The more the pay, the more forms to complete. I would also confirm that $75.00 is pretty average.

I did one close to home as my first hotel shop. Told them I was fumigating. I stayed alone even though I was allowed a guest as my husband was the dog sitter. But he drove over in the morning and joined me for the buffet breakfast (not included in the room price but I was allowed a guest on that shop).
