Purchase and return shops

I have a couple of these coming up, and I just wondered what "excuse" you give when you are returning something. In this case, it's shoes. I've thought of saying that I decided they were too expensive (it's a higher end store) or maybe that my husband didn't like them. Do either of those sound lame? The only other return shop I had was a shirt and I just told them it didn't go with the pants I had at home. The other thing is that I need to return the shoes on the same day because I'm doing the jobs on the last day of the assignment--can't be helped due to scheduling. I figure I'll buy the shoes, go do another assignment in the same area, and then return the shoes. I'm open to suggestions for return stories! TIA smiling smiley

Tell them you found a pair at another store that works better for you.

I had been looking in vain for the perfect pair and although these would do, they just weren't it. I FOUND the perfect pair was already in my closet so am returning these.

My husband had a fit I paid this much for a pair of shoes when I have 'a closet full of serviceable shoes'. Grrrr.

I tried them with the outfit I planned to wear them with and they just didn't work.

I got home and decided I just didn't like them.

I don't know what I was thinking when I got these. I must have been really tired. Sorry. I need to return them.

I really can't afford these, I don't know what I was thinking. They are truly beautiful.

Honestly it is none of their business why you are returning them. But if you have to use one of the excuses above. Any of them will work. Or a simple I changed my mind.

Thanks, everyone. I have to return the shoes on the same day, so I don't want to look suspicious. The "found something better" idea makes sense for that situation. I'll be happy to hear any other ideas though.
Be advised, the purchase will show up on your credit card right away, but the return will take several days. Just a little something to keep in mind before doing several purchase/return shops.

Thanks for the heads up!
Be careful with saying that you can't afford them. Usually, you're also evaluating their attempt to save the sale. If you say you can't afford, the sales associate won't attempt to save the sale. If it's a high end place just say that you got home and these didn't work for you.

That's good advice!
Speaking of returning a pair of shoes, I am reminded of my experience a while back. My excuse was I changed my mind. Unfortunately, it was the manager who was behind the counter. He shouted at me and asked me why I bothered to buy it if I was going to return it anyway. I explained that the fit was not that good when I tried them on at home. Instead of suggesting another pair, he was red-faced and shaking when he took the shoe box and handed me the receipt to sign while giving me a very nasty, loud lectureThis caused some shoppers to stop to watch. He dumped the money on the counter and all the items on top rattled, including the coins. No one would mistake him for being cool. He walked off in a huff and left abruptly towards the backroom. I was so afraid he was going to have a heart attack.

Purchase and return are not my kind of thing because of that experience. But I have never encountered anyone that negative again nor have I seen that manager again in that store. Nowadays, they smile when they accept the return even though at the back of their minds they can see their commission fly away.
