Staying anonymous while shopping hotels

I have done a number of hotel shops and would love to do more. One company I shop for has mostly local shops. They have a handful of hotels available and they let you use your rewards information when you book your reservation. I have wondered whether they can track you as a shopper based on the fact that you've stayed at their "sister" properties. Another company I shop for has hotels all over the country and tells you that you can give the hotel your rewards information at checkout. The last time I booked a hotel, they automatically added my rewards info to the reservation. I wasn't signed in to my rewards when I booked online, but somehow it knew the information. I have wondered whether this could compromise my identity as a shopper.

Part of the reason I have done hotel shops is for the rewards points. As I understand it, your reservation information must match the rewards info on file in order to receive the points. I'm curious about how other shoppers protect their anonymity and still obtain the rewards points. Also, any insight into how hotels can track/identify shoppers would be appreciated.
