SSN not required

These Best Buy shops just showed up where we give them a fake SSN (provided) but our real driver's license, name and address, and we claim to have bad credit. Is it just me that does not really not feel comfortable doing things like this (for $10)?

I just signed up for one. I just can't see how I won't look like an idiot when I have to look for my SS number in my purse.
Not for me, thanks. $10 to put up with that client? With my luck they would decide to waive the flunked credit report and stick the purchase to me!
And what IF that number actually belongs to someone? How do we know... did they apply to SSI to verify a false #. And what if it triggers an alert to all of the credit protection plans out there. IF it went far it could be traced to you with your drivers license. No thanks.

Another one does this for TRU too.
No thanks, gas will cost 5.00, so a 5.00 profit doesn't cut it. Why wouldn't your phone# do? Can't see giving SS# to a random guy.

Live consciously....

The SSA has set aside a group of numbers that aren't issued and will never be issued for purposes of advertising, using on TV/movies, ect. I assume the client will have you use those.

However, those numbers are easy to spot as phony as they all start with 9 (no valid SSN starts with 9, though some EINs do). My guess is if you have any employee who's somewhat versed in the security industry, they'll see right through it.
