How much are you willing to put on a credit card for a P/R?

I asked a similar question many moons ago, and am just wondering now, with fees so low for shops, how much would you purchase on your card knowing it would be returned right away. The most I have ever done is computers for $700 or thereabouts but only if the fee was at least $50 for the job, and now I usually won't do them for less than $75. I did a high end handbag shop last summer, (spent $400 on a bag that would be returned in a couple of days), and that was not too far out of the neighborhood and if I remember right paid $30. Now another MSP has that account and they are only offering $15 with the stipulation, "DO NOT purchase anything on sale, you must be willing to place up to $500 on your card, blah, blah, blah). I see there are no takers.

Thats a joke. I wouldn't waste my time.
I don't do purchase and return, period.

Based in MD, near DC
Shopping from the Carolinas to New York

Poor customer service? Don't get mad; get video.
I agree, I rather not do P/R at all. There was one shop where P/R were $5 more than no P/R for the same report and location and I opted for the one without.
A P/R, for all intents and purposes, needs to be viewed as two shops. The only time they potentially make sense is when they pay a fair fee for two shops. If the return can be done soon enough that it doesn't require driving to the site twice, I view the R part as a second shop along a route. There is, of course, no benefit to you from the shop as a reimbursement, so it must stand on the fees alone. If I won't go to the location for an overall benefit of less than $15 and wouldn't stop for a route shop with a benefit of under $10, then the fee for the shop would need to be at least $25 to become interesting if it is a quick return. If it is going to take two separate trips, the fee would need to be at least $30. And this, of course, applies to shops that are nearby and easily accessible. As for the amount on the credit card, that really would not concern me much as long as the shop and return were performed far enough from the cycle closing date on the card I used that they would cancel out on the same credit card bill.
For me, it depends on the shop fee and required length of time to wait to do the return. There are several shops for which I prefer to do a true P/R, rather than a purchase with an "optional" return, for the reason that Flash cited above.

That said, I do sometimes do Beyond Hello's $15.00 purchase shop, but only when it's convenient. The return portion on that one (both for the item and also the shop form) is optional, but I know the shop like the back of my hand, so for me, it's very easy. If the return didn't have to be made at the same location, I might even do that one more often.
Doesn't the return "almost" always have to be at the same shop? I am now treating a p/r as two shops, and just got 15.00 for each shop. Was in the store, total work time 10 minutes, won't do them for one fee.

In some instances, you can return to a different location when the return does not have to be evaluated. The Coach shop is one example.
I would not do these shops unless there was a real high fee. I definitely would not put high fees on my credit card. I certainly would not do the $12 Coach shop and put several hundred dollars on my credit card.
Okay explain it to me why not? Do you still get charged the interest if the merchandise is returned. I've done the high dollar $500 item and returned it 2 days later. No extra interest. I just have a problem with that long A$$ report. I feel that is not worth it.
It's not so much the amount put on the card I guess, but the extra return. In case you haven't noticed from this or other threads, I absolutely HATE returns.
Where I work, all returns must be thrown away. Such a total waste, and HATE waste, especially when there are starving people.
I am getting emails from GFK daily, they will have new retail jobs where the purchase can be over $500.00...anyone want to be first in line.

48 hour return, and the return portion is a breeze. I don't mind that shop at all, and have done it several times. One time I did it, it was bonused, I think to $55.
Irene, I get that same GFK as well; its almost a joke. They must have the same shop nationwide.
Not that it will make a difference to those of you who don't like the shop's concept, but the reason the purchase stipulation is so high is because that price range is typical for the store. There is one department where that's not the case, and the purchase requirement is lower.
I have bought many items (in the day) from my sister who just retired after 30yrs. from that store....many floors carry items much less than 500.00, if we're talking about the same shop (GKF).

Kitty...the nationwide upscale department store, Would you do it?

I did it and it was rejected saying I shopped the wrong departments but they were listed on the test that I passed. Plus there were a total of 68 questions on the purchase report. Reminds me of why I stopped doing them.
There's a P/R shop with a $50 fee from Beyond Hello. Completion has to be within four days from today. That rules me out, as I'm booked. Could be worth while. The purchase and return should fall within the same credit card cycle.
I would not do that for such a low fee. I don't do them anyway just to much of a hassle.

The departments aren't listed on the test, they're in the questionnaire when you're assigned the shop.
Mert, I looked hard at that one (Beyond Hello), I say the money is for two shops, problem for me is two trips 60 miles each, just don't want too...could we return within the same day, yes, for $50.00 I'd do it. I did a Brighton P/R just because it is in my mall (3 miles) and a delightful store, you can return anytime. I was distressed having to return, as the Associate will lose her commission. I actually exchanged for something less that I wanted. I usually don't think about it when it is at a store far from me...but, living there and always hanging at the mall, felt bad. I won't charge more than $50.00 ever again. Famous last words!

I think I may have done this one, but unfortunately, without the bonus. If it IS the same shop, there is a reason they want you to wait so long before returning.
They have a four day return for the Beyond Hello job...guess they have their reasons.

It isn't a bonused shop. $50 is the fee. I didn't apply so I couldn't see more specific guidelines. I'm sure there's a reason the fee is $50. Fees typically are commensurate with expectation.
If the fee is $50, it wasn't the one I did. However, I suspect the reason for the delayed return is the same, to see if there is communication after the purchase.
Mert, I did that one for the $50.00 fee a few months ago...reason for nice fee being you have to purchase and return, not same day. I enjoyed that shop, I believe the pay is figured for being two shops, it is generous, most I do I get 20.00 for, but can return same day. Going into the "city" with parking and traffic, ugh!!

Live consciously....
$25 per shop is above average for P/R. As I recall from the shop comments, the purchase was likely to be in the $200 range. If my calendar had room to schedule the return 4 days after the purchase, I would take it.
I believe this one is a 500.00 purchase (I could be wrong)....it is an easy job, if it were in my area, yes, I'd grab it...I have gotten many 25.00 highend retail in Bev. Hills, NSS often pays me 20.00 for a 20 minute job, you can do two a day in the same store, so I do many for them monthly, going between two locations. Mert, go for it...

Live consciously....
The amount of the required purchase is not a factor for me. The way I see it, I am ultimately out $0. I have multiple credit cards that have cycle end dates throughout the month. I've never carried an additional balance on a card due to a p/r shop.

What determines whether I will take a P/R shop is ultimately how much profit I will earn vs. the time involved vs. the effort involved.

I'd do $4000 p/r shops all day long if they paid $50, could be returned same day and had short reviews with minimal narratives.
