I've been doing this a while - and just wondering - after you've gotten follow up and submitted the shop, is it OK to reply to the salesperson that you've decided not to buy or something? Today's salesperson was really nice and very sweet. Hate to leave him hanging, but I don't know if this is frowned upon/not allowed (even though guidelines say nothing about it). I guess the same thing with apartment shops, and anything else where they send follow-up.
I have experienced similar salesmen who did a great job, and followed up with me asking if I was ready to move forward? I usually reply with something along the lines of "I found another car that met my needs better."
I feel that would help them take me off their follow-up list and better prioritize their time. I did not see anything in the guidelines one way or the other, and think this approach is fair to everyone.

It's in the guidelines under "follow up."
Paraphrased:
First follow up contact, state you're still looking at another vehicle. Second follow up say you are no longer in the market.
When I needed to get a new car, I decided on a Kia (no inventory with Toyota and those that had were marking up a lot) - so I went to the dealership where I had a great experience, and where I knew they sold at MSRP!

And yeah, I hate to tell them that, too, when I've had a really good sales experience!
Maybe the salespeople get something for a good mystery shop? Gold star, brownie points, the infamous "pizza party"?
But when you think about it, any business should do their best because if they alienate a customer, it's not just one person. It's all that customer's friends, family and anyone who reads their online reviews or comments, too!
