Wells Fargo account closure

I want to give a heads up to shoppers who do Wells Fargo shops to open an account and close it later. You are no longer able to close the account on the phone. There are three options. You go to the Wells Fargo bank you opened the account to close it. You go to any Wells Fargo Bank to close the account. You send a letter to a specified address with the account information, your contact information (must match your contact information you have with Wells Fargo), and the letter must be notarized. The average price for a notary is $20.00.

The options mean time and money for transportation or the notary. The mystery shopping company does not disclose the change or additional cost to close the account in the guidelines. Not a surprise since they are not shopper friendly in my opinion. When I inquired about the letter option the Wells Fargo representative I spoke with on the phone had to look up the procedure so it appears this is new policy and procedure.

Are you saying you have to return to the SAME wells fargo where you opened it? That doesn't seem right. You should be able to close it from any Wells Fargo location. I can understand they do not want to do account closings over the phone anymore. But it sounds strange that it has to be the same exact location where you opened the account. Can you cut/paste where you are seeing this from WF? Or did they just tell you this on the phone when you tried to close?

I was on the phone, not the web site. There are 3 options to close the account. Going to the same bank you opened the account is 1 of the options. You have 2 other options as well.
i refuse to believe you have to return to the same branch. I understand returning to one of the branches, but they do close branches, people do move. They cannot force you to return to the same branch you opened it. Maybe the phone rep was misinformed or misstated the policy.

The website still shows you can close by phone (unless I am misreading that)

Strange heads up.

No. That was just the first option the OP listed. The second option listed was to go to any WF branch.

Yes, i missed the "any wells fargo" in the original post. I guess I don't understand the point of the post. It must be that you cannot close the account over the phone. You have to visit any branch or do the notarized thing which most people won't bother with. To mention the specific branch seems irrelevant since you can go to any branch. I was caught up in the first option being so nonsensical.

i haven't had to try and close an account on the phone in quite some time, but the WF website makes it appear you can still do so. Maybe they haven't updated the website or the phone rep was untrained?
Bigdaddy,
I might choose to do an account opening shop on a route 60 miles or more from home (there are none where I live). So this information was beneficial to me.
I closed a WF checking account by calling about three weeks ago. I would be very surprised if WF stopped letting people close accounts over the phone

@wrosie It doesn't matter where you open an account because you can close it at any branch.
I suspect the OP was just relaying what WF told them, and I suspect the WF rep. just assumed the branch where the OP opened the account was the most convenient branch for the OP.

I thought it was an odd heads-up post but still appreciated that the OP was trying to warn other shoppers of potential issues.

Wells Fargo keeps this information buried, but you can close your account online yourself; that's how I close mine. They want you to either call (yes, you CAN still close an account over the phone—I just verified this information with a US-based phone banker) or visit a bank so that an employee can try to persuade you to keep the account open.

I feel like this thread just needs to be deleted.

Other banks I've dealt with had required in-person closures but that was before Covid and more remote options.

I plan to close 3 of my 4 in one shot to make it worth the time.

I did 2 Wells Fargo shops within the last 2 months. The first one I closed the account by phone as I always have in the past. The second one was in the last 2 weeks. When I called to close it 4 days ago the Wells Fargo representative informed me that was not an option anymore, and he told me the 3 options. The closest Well Fargo location for me is 28 miles, one way (also the one where I did the shop). The second location for me is 45 miles, one way. It would take me 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 hours depending on traffic, and 2-3 gallons of fuel. I stand by my post. Jacob is welcome to delete it if he sees fit.

Stand by it all you want, but I bet if you called the toll-free number again and spoke with a different banker, they'd tell you they could help you close your account.

Regardless, do a little research and you'll figure out how to close the account yourself online. No need for all the "the sky is falling! the sky is falling!" histrionics.

Yeah but the nearest branch is over 60 miles away. So it does matter to me. Hence my posting "there are none near me" paraphrased.

For all those people doing shops at WF that are far away...my question is did you pick this shop up by itself or with several other shops? If you did it with several others, then get the several other shops again (maybe a 5 guys or Panda Express or something else) and when in that area, close the account.

I agree, if they do NOT let you do it over the phone, then you line up other shops and close the account when you are in the area again. it certainly doesn't make sense to go just to close the account (if not convenient). But I agree with @drdoggie00 in that if you call again and get the same info again, then maybe they changed the policy. However, if someone moved out of a state where they have a branch...how realistic is it for them to return just to close the account? I think you can get 5 different answers from 3 different bankers if you keep calling and talking to different people.
Daddy - for me the closest one is 100 miles each way. I open them when well bonused and incorporate other shops to make a good day. Often the other shops are bonused, super easy and/or offer some decent gas reimbursements (I'm staying on the petrol spectrum as long as they'll let me!).

If only making a route was that easy. Even a $30 MF shop isn't worth driving over an hour each way let alone gas and tolls.

I'll just ask all the MSCs I used on my first route that made it profitable to have those same shops available for me when I need to drive and close my account. I'm sure they'll help me out. Tongue in cheek.

So yes, this information is valuable to me.

My good deed for the day:

From Wellsfargo.com on a desktop/laptop upon login: accounts tab -> manage accounts -> close an account

From Wellsfargo.com on a mobile device upon login: menu -> account services -> close an account

Closing an account via the Wells Fargo app is not supported. The account must have a $0 balance and not have earned any interest.

If your account is not eligible for online closure, you can call 800-869-3557 or visit a branch.

I had a horrendous experience with their financial advisors when settling mother's estate. They kept it for a whole year while making me jump through never-ending hoops. So I get much satisfaction in taking their money by means of shop pay.
I also got a lot of misinformation when handling my mom's estate which I have written about in other threads.
As far as this thread is concerned banks and other institutions where money exchange is involved are moving away from releasing funds/sending funds/closing or changing information such as your email or street address by a phone call. It is/was just too easy for someone to call and change your information over the phone and then later, again over the phone, take all your hard earned money out and send it to themselves. Modern times with modern scams and schemes are often there to protect you.
I just looked at my checking acct at Wells Fargo. It says I cannot close it online unless it has a zero balance. I did not empty my account to try that but why not transfer the balance of your acct to yourself and then it seems you can close it online. Has anyone tried that?

That's all you have to do to empty it. Transfer it to another Wells Fargo account (if you have one), Paypal it to yourself, Zelle it to yourself, whatever method you have for moving money around. Once it's taken to $0, as long as it's not an interest-bearing account, you should be able to close it online.

we opened first account with Meridian Bank. It was bought by Core States Bank. After being acquired by First Union Corporation, which later also acquired Wachovia National Bank to become Wachovia Corporation. Soon after Wells Fargo bought Wachovia. We seased all relationships with such names in 1997 when American Bank was established. They offered at that time 6% interest. I did hundreds MS with bank. I am prefer cMS with community banks.

You guys gave me the idea, which I'd never considered, of closing by phone and it worked. I tranfered the entire balances of 3 accounts into the fourth that I wanted to keep then immediately called customer service and easily and quickly closed the 3 accounts. Or so they say. We'll see if it's true at statement time. It could take up to 90 days to show as closed they say.

Then I Zelled myself the amount that was over the very minimum to avoid charges and sent it to another bank.

I don't mess with most of these because I like to keep my Chex record clean for the bigger fish that are often offered.

Life was passing like a hand waving from a train I wanted to be on
My guess is you'd only have to make one call to WF to ask them to (1) zero out balances by transfer them to a WF account you don't want to close, and (2) close out the accounts that have zero balances.
we need to close one account for deseased in law. But death certificate is not enough. We need to give them paid funeral stub.
