roadside assistance shops

back in CA I did a few of these. They were fun, but they didn't pay much back then. They are going for $50 each right now. I'm very tempted to renew my roadside assistance membership and do enough of them to cover the cost and give me a few pennies on top. That way, when I get my new (to me) car, I'll have backup in case I make another mistake and get a POS again.

Has anyone done these new ones? Have they changed significantly? More work, less work? I'm probably still going to do a couple just so that I can have reliable roadside assistance again.

FYI, each one you do will count against your alloted amount for your plan. With the basic plan it only allows 4 calls per year, so if you truly needed the service you could have used up your allotment on shops. Im not sure how many calls are allowed with the better plan but it's more costly so not worth it just to do the shops, or maybe it is..not sure.

I have an old vehicle and need my calls..btw, last week it took me 7 hours to get home after calling AAA for a tow..flatbed couldn't fit in the parking garage...got a free year promised by AAA as compensation after I complained..would have made a good shop.

Yeah, that's what stopped me ... I don't want to burn up my allotment.
I just checked my CSAA Premier benefits and found out they have changed. Now, I can still get four tows a per but they are broken down to "200-mile tow 1x/yr, 100-mile tows 3x/yr." I was about to downgrade to Plus (100-mile tows, 4x/yr) but changed my mind because Premier reimburses $50 for windshield repair.

Apparently I'm going to have to call customer service to get a clearer explanation of what services I can get or will get with which level because it didn't really make sense to me when I read it online. I always had roadside assistance, my mother insisted on it when we were coming up. Bad about 12 years ago I let it lapse because I had a lack of money and dependable cars..
I have done them through AAA and through my new car warranty. My local AAA is very speedy. They come and connect a jumper battery and it is very easy. The company that handles new car warranty coverage (for a dead battery since I can't possibly lock the keys in my car - it is too smart to let me) is very slow. The same company handles Ford and Kia (my current car). They can take an hour to come, so I learned to schedule it for a time when I could sit comfortably at home. I have not needed the services, so using up calls is not a problem for me with AAA. I look at it as easy money. Screenshots and timing make an easy report.

Is a battery jump counted the same as a 100 or 200 mile tow? It seems out of wack somehow.

Rosie, that's one of my questions..
I did one when they had the Gekko company (that word was on the Wordle one day and it really flummoxed me). It was super easy. I think once the guy showed up, the whole thing took 20 minutes including the report. Just pick a day when the weather won’t be rainy/snowy.
lol metro, I'm in Northern AL. We have just entered tornado season, we're going to have storms almost daily for another month before they turn into pop up heat storms for the rest of the summer.. With the exception of a few weeks in the early spring and near the end of summer, we have rain 3 - 4 days in any given week.
I've done them in the past. They gave me a temporary membership for that shop. I went to a restaurant and called, then relaxed until they came. I left a set of keys in the ignition and had a spare in my pocket.

Do not read so much, look about you and think of what you see there.

The last time I needed a real tow my car was not starting at a friends house. I called my insurance tow people (USAA) and my friends called their AAA, After hours of waiting neither showed up so they drove me home and I came back the next day. We both called our companies again and after 3 hours someone from AAA showed up but without a tow truck. It was indeed my battery and I thought I needed to be towed but the guy fortunately knew how to recharge temporarily the Prius battery. They agreed to follow me over to the repair shop as I was afraid the battery would conk out on the way there and I would need to wait another 12 hours for them to arrive. It was a nice cool so cal evening and a nice sunny not too warm day the next. So I am reluctant to do these!
I have AAA and its not. (edited since question didn't copy). Battery runs do not count the same as tows.

I am curious how everyone is draining their batteries?
I haven't done one of these, but I would loosen the cables. I had an old Pontiac Bonneville once and the platform that the battery sat upon was loose and the cables would loosen up over time and the battery would appear to be dead. Feel free to use this scenerio free of charge.. I guess I could go onto Tiktok and sell it.

They never check anything. They just connect the jumper, tell me to try starting the call. Wowie zowie, the car starts!

They just connected the jumper cables and told me to start the car. No need to loosen cables or drain the battery.

Agreed! I've never had anybody attempt to test the battery.
