Eating at restaurants on your own dime

@hbbigdaddy

That's why the FIRE community calls it the, "one more year syndrome."

(Plus, in CA you have locked in property tax.)

I never said I was purchasing food every day. Of course when the Lebron James backed build your own pizza place was picked, it would be a shop for me. Other places that were shopped (if picked) I would do as well. I am into deals (coupons/bogos/value offers) so I would take advantage of those.

For the first 10 years at the company I rarely spent money out, but as I started increasing my net worth more and more I felt like treating myself.

I'm early 50's. I probably could retire if I really "hunkered down" and sold two CA properties, but I don't want to be miserly. I enjoy the life and non-work activities enough to keep working for maybe until 60.

I used to think 3 million was good enough to retire, but that was before everything shot way up in price. My new number/goal is 5 million at this point.

We are a team on big-ticket items like this. But in 2018 or 2019, we did a TexasdeBrazil shop. The bill totaled over $250, including the bar visit, food, and tip. I did everything I was supposed to. They did not give me an itemized receipt, and the shop was not paid. The guidelines or the report indicated that one was required. Apparently, in the previous guidelines, it was, and I was expected to be aware of that. It was safe to say neither of us was pleased with that. Since we don't eat out that often, he refuses to work for his meals. When we do go out to eat, if he pays, I'm not working. If I do a parking shop downtown, I will try to get us one.

I signed up for Texas De Brazil once but cancelled after I read the instructions. Much too complicated!
You can get 20% off the gift cards at Costco for TdB. Plus if you go for lunch, it's cheaper. Also some locations are cheaper than others.

One thing I learned early on, the more the MSC reimburses or pays, the more information they expect from you. For TdB (or Fogo de Chao) I will gladly pay for it myself and not sweat all the details. Do other "quick hit" shops and use that pay to treat yourself to a nice meal.
The Greene Turtle, who is no longer shopped, is one of my go to restaurants.

I remember the Green Turtle from when I lived in the DC area...was pub food as I recall?
I thought they went out of business....interesting.
