What does "tip on the net check" mean?

Does it mean you must tip on the total including tax or not including tax?

In the USA tipping is 15% or 20% or more of the bill not including tax. A pet peeve of mine is restaurants that try to have customers leave a 20% tip including tax.
Net is the pre-tax bill, gross is your total with tax added.
Generally they call it subtotal when speaking of a restaurant check!
"Subtotal" is less specific. If there was a bar visit required, you'll have two subtotals but one net (both activities added together). So, I am guessing this is either a fine dining visit or the person who wrote it is used to writing for those.
net is the total before add on ( tax, service fee etc) gross is all around final
And now that damned 3% surcharge for paying with a credit card!
While Coyle requires pre-tax tip calculations, at least one MSC (TJN) clearly states in their guidelines that the tip should be calculated post-tax, and even stingy ACL covers post-tax tipping (albeit sometimes below 20 percent).

When dining with friends or family members I can't ever remember anyone calculating the tip pre-tax (or tipping 15%, for that matter).

I do agree that there is no need to factor in service charges, "kitchen appreciation fees," and other such junk when calculating the tip.

Some of these places print the tip amounts at the bottom with percentages. I always check though to see if they are doing it pre-tax (net) or post tax (gross).

I refuse to tip on top of the taxes being charged. They did something special to get more money? If a tip is an appreciation of service (but expected at sit down dining with service), then why would i tip for the govt grab as well?

Most MSC are not very clear on what they expect and they simply put a percentage and expect us to know.
I love how fast food now gives you the option of adding a tip. For what putting my order in the computer? Isn't that the job description?

Yes, I agree that tipping on the bill post tax is gross.
