Has anyone ever

Has anyone ever gotten to their 6th or 7th shop for the day and asked themselves if this is really worth it and then started doing your reports and found your answer? I once did a fast food shop and it really sucked. The order taker was texting, flies were everywhere. The inside trash cans were overflowing and the tables had crap on them. I did this shop again in 3 weeks. There were bug light things on each wall of the restaurant and a nice ordertaker! I always remember what actual GOOD we do to improve things.

Good story, yes, that makes it worth while...we usually don't see the end result...I'm happy to say I've never shopped a horrible dirty place, but for you that do, keep up the good work.

Live consciously....

This was in a Wally World. A Mickey D's.
Well... today I was feeling kind of sorry for myself. Thinking about all of the work I have to do (both shopping as well as my other job), missing my little one (with the grandparents) and stressing about the imminent start of (pre) school for him... and then it occured to me, as I waited to cross the street to go back to the luxury hotel I am shopping, to have the required wine and cheese flight before my room service dinner (although those who know me, know I loathe room service dinners - they creep me out) - life cannot be all bad.
You're right about balance. The only really "crappy" shop I've done was a convenience store with no indoor bathroom. Porta-potties outside that were kind of gross. Had to take pictures. But the really good places far outnumber the bad ones.

I shopped two convenience stores where BOTH owners had removed the bathroom sink!!...um..just "how" are you supposed to wash your hands?

Yikes!
One of the grocery stores I shop in my area used to have the most disgusting deli area ever (and that's me putting it nicely!) On one of my last trips, the slicer was covered in bits of meat, the counter was covered in bits of meat, the woman didn't have gloves on, and when she "attempeted" to clean off the slicer with a rag and cleaning spray, she then set the dirty rag on top of the meat she was going to slice for me (which was sitting open on the counter.) Let's just say my required purchase was thrown in the trash as soon as I got home.

I was busy with work the past few weeks, so it had been a little over a month since I had done a shop there. Went in this week, and the deli area has comepletely changed. Sparkling clean counters, everyone wearing proper sanitation protection, slicer was spotless - it didn't even look like the same deli area.

I'm sure my reports had something to do with the changes, and it's nice to be reminded about why we do what we do sometimes.
Well my hats off for just doing 7 shops in one day. I've never done more than 2 in one day....
Ugh, I did a shop a couple of years ago that was a gas station that sold some food items made on site. It was gross and disgusting in the store and then had to touch the key to use the bathroom. It had dead bugs squished on it and other things.

The bathroom had a garbage can that was not just overflowing, but probably had about two more cans full of paper on the floor around it. Toilet was horrifying, the sink was covered with slimy black mold and had something plant growing out of the drain.

I felt like I should go for a hazmat clean up when I left. I threw the item I bought for my $1 away as even wrapped I was afraid to eat something from that place.

My son is going to college in that town and I made him promise to never, ever go in there. I drove by it after dropping him off this week and from the exterior I am quite certain nothing has changed.

I work some of the same convenience stores monthly. I have seen some major changes since reporting issues. The stores are immaculate now. You can eat off the floors after my reports have been submitted consistently. Like richraynor said, "our work does sometimes pay off."
I have one gas station that one visit will be awful. The inside is dark and the coolers empty and the bathroom is bad. It is so bad when I open the door I find something to block the door open and stand as far back as I can get to take the photo. The outside has panhandlers standing around and the most of the pumps do not work.

When I went back this time the bathroom was closed and the inside of the store had lights and was clean and the panhandlers gone. The pumps still did not work.

It boils down to what did not cost the owner any money he fixed. He is not going to fix him anything that will cost him big bucks. It has been this way for several years. The oil companies pay us to see if their stations are up to their standards and if they are not it makes no difference to them. At least the panhandlers are gone.
I never dreamed this would happen - the other day I was in the convenience store doing a reveal shop taking pix of the cashier. He was nice as could be - smiling and posing (he was used to it). He annouced to the other patrons that I was a mystery shopper. One of these other patrons happened to be a uniformed employee of the store I was going to next! It was only about 10 minutes away - a well-known electronics / appliance store, the one where you evaluate two employees. Sure enough the same guy was there working. Avoided him like the plague and luckily he wasn't manning the departments I was visiting!
I did a post office like that once. A long street and a post office at each end. They are not large buildings. I did one and the usual clerk was there with another clerk who waited on me. Went to the second one and had to waste some time so I visited a grocery I dearly loved. Went in the second post office and the same employee that was at the other one walked behind the counter from the back. She looked directly at me and we spoke. She had to know me from the other store because my bright colored hat is hard to miss. I figured it would have been more rude not to speak that it was to speak especially when we looked at each other eye to eye.

I shopped her post office several more times and she never indicated she might know she was being shopped. She always went by the book so there was never any problems with the shop.
