My bank and PayPal both do this to me when I have been using my credit cards for a lot of small purchases,(usually when doing a route of gas stations.) It is very annoying. Pretty easy to take care of, usually you just have to call the number provided and confirm they were all your charges, but if in line at Walmart I can see where this would be a hassle.
I hate when that happens! Chase was continuously doing that when was using my card for the $5 purchase gas shops. Annoying! Although - Citi recently froze my credit card account for suspicious activity - and it was! About $800 was charged in cash out purchases of $80 at a time at Walmart and Home Depot in Ft. Myers, FLA - I've never been there. That time it was a good thing they froze it or there's no telling how much the thief could have gotten. Card was not lost, I had both cards my wallet the whole time.
Someone from one of the places you recently used your card copied the credit card numbers and made a new credit card with your info. I had that happen to me twice and was able to trace it back to the last place I used it. One was a store that sold joke items and another was a restaurant. Thankfully the credit card companies caught on fast and called me asap so there were no problems.
...

guess i should sing a different tune then... i thought it was just them...

currently there are 80 cases of such fraud investigations going on in PA... most involve large purchases of gift cards... they are basically cash or can be exchanged as such...

glad im not one of them... sigh... still tis very frustrating...

any one know how many small purchases it usually takes? looking at my account it seems they stop the 7th transaction in the day... then the close at like 6 in the afternoon even though my card says "24 hour service" bah...

guess i will not cancel...

It's a fine line between needing the protection and needing to use our cards for the types of purchases that would trigger security. I had the same problem with Capital One several years ago and gave up using it for those small gas station transactions. Since then I use my debit card. Those purchases also trigger their security, but they will call me. It's a smaller local bank and I had to explain what I was doing so it wouldn't trigger a shut down. They still call on occasion to be sure there are no problems. Before I rarely carried cash, now I make sure to have enough as a back up.

YMMV with all credit cards.

Funny thing, cooldude, is that Cap One was my salvation on my recent trip when my Barclays card triggered an alert.

Cap One took down my entire itinerary before I left and the card worked like a charm in every country with no foreign transaction fees!
Just to clarify, out of all the cards I've had Cap One has been the best. It's just those piddly gas station purchases that were a problem.

Very wise of you to contact them with your itinerary. That would not have crossed my mind. Another reason most of us are just not cut out for MSing around the worldsmiling smiley You realize you should change your handle now that you are a Mystery Shopping Legend!

I live in MD and had a lot of work done on my car 250+ miles away in NJ. That $990 charge on my BoA debit card, followed closely by a purchase at an NJ Macys triggered a phone call and text to my cell asking me to verify that the card was in my possession. I think that most banks now have an option to get such alerts via email and/or text. Check with Cap One to see what your options might be.
paypal also now allows you to add a cell number as your "go to" security check number, to minimize down time due to security alerts. You have the option to get a call or use email or text as the alert format.

I have a friend that had a $700 charge (gas) from Pilot gas staion in New mexico, card not missing, someone got name and #. Investagation pursuing, and we think
we know who did it, but can't accuse him and she has to be polite to him daily.

We think it a ring and yes, they had to make a CC to swipe for gas.....very disturbing. This was a Visa card and they called her when purchase was made.

Live consciously....
i called the fraud department...

they said it was a $4.98 charge from overseas...

i updated an app to pro and they said it was suspicious...i guess it wasnt my 6 prior charges

I've only ever had that happen once, someone at IAH cloned my card and made some online purchases, which Chase in this case caught right away. Doesn't make me like Chase any more than I do, which isn't much, but I appreciated it nevertheless. :-)
I use both Capital One and Chase cards and get cash back rewards. I have never had any problems. However, someone got my husband's credit card number and charged over a thousand dollars. It was picked up by Chase fraud department. When we travel and my husband runs up large numbers, the card always gets declined. He then has to call Chase. This happened on several occasions.
Call Chase ahead of an overseas trip and tell them you dates. Almost all credit card companies have ways to accomodate your foreign travle if you give them a heads up!
