Long Time Friends

In March of 1998, I adopted two dogs from an animal shelter. I only wanted one, but there was a condition set up by the original owners, that the two had to go together. They were brother and sister (littler mates). I reluctantly adopted both of them. They ended up being the best dogs ever. They were 1 ½ years old when I got them back then. Buster died several years ago and that was hard. Trixie died this morning, even though I knew it was coming, it was harder than losing Buster. I buried her this morning in the yard. The stories I could tell you about them!

If you have a chance, look up the breed Basenji. Buster was a tri color, which is more rare, and Trixie was a brindle.

Sorry for your loss.....I lost my Missy a few years back, and never replaced her, she was like a family member.

It's so sad that the pets we love have such short lives. We have 6 dogs and we lost our boy Mac a year ago, it still hurts.
My condolences. It's really hard to lose a loyal and long time friend. I currently have a little Shiba Inu and I hate the idea of losing him.
I am so sorry for your loss.

Basenji. Have you ever read the Dogs in Elk story? True story and hilarious.

Some people do not realize it's like losing a family member. Obviously the members, that have responded, do. So sorry for your loss.
You have my sympathy. Each one of our pets is unique and leaves a hole that can never be filled. Bless you for choosing shelter pups in the first place. I'm sure they were grateful for every minute of the 14 years.
It's sad, spazctk. You and your dogs were very fortunate to have shared many years. After a while, all those good years are what you will remember.
My condolences as well. Thanks for the reminder to spend some time quality with my long time friend tonight.
I am so sorry you lost your pal and the best friend. I know how hard it is to lose a pet as they become such a BIG part of the family. We had Great Danes and I dearly loved them. The first one did everything but talk, had a great sense of humor and was so smart, gentle and kind. It took 3 to fill up the hole he left but then each of them had their own personality.

BTW, I just finished reading Sophie which is the story of the Blue that fell off a boat in New Zealand, swam in shark infested water to an island and lived on her own for 6 mos. before she was trapped and by odd coincidence "found" by her family who adored her. If you do a search for "sophie dog overboard" you can read about her.

Another dog here in NM named Blue who was in the news here. He belongs to the town and no one owns him. He hangs around one of the local stores and the storeowner makes sure he's fed. He made the news because a couple people insisted that he needed to be on a leash BUT no one owns him and he's caused now harm. As a matter of fact, he's got his own Facebook account and is loved by the majority of the townspeople.

Another dog you should Google is the Great Dane named Giant George. He has his own web site, has flown to NY, been on Oprah and Today and is the tallest dog.
Sorry for your loss. I lost my childhood dog about 7 years ago and it was so sad. I have a black lab now who is 12, she is starting to have issues with her age and I know time is not on her side. She is my baby and I love her to pieces.

Basenjis are beautiful dogs. smiling smiley
I am sorry for your loss and I hope the pain you feel now will soon be overshadowed by the wonderful memories you have of Trixie and Buster. Thank you for opening your home to both so that they could stay together. We also have shelter dogs and they are such characters, we can often tell what they are thinking just by their facial expression. I did a quick search for Basenjis and they are adorable.
As my dogs continue to get older, I know that day will eventually come. And I have forewarned everyone that I will probably cry like a baby for a week. We've got two Boston Terriers (Addison and Arielle) that are biological sisters from different litters, and we've had them both from the time they were 8 weeks old. Whenever I see the two of them, I'm amazed at just how different their personalities are, just like human siblings sometimes.

I was never a dog person before them, and now all I can do is think..."How?" Yes, they can annoy the daylights out of you at times, but you'll never find a more loyal friend.

I am so sorry for your loss.
I loved cats and liked dogs. Then we had Macbeth. We named him that because his mother was Juliet and we were on Shakespearean names at the time. One of our hamsters was Hamlet. My husband says that Macbeth didn't know he was a dog. Macbeth lived 14 years. Now I love cats and love dogs.
I'm so sorry for your loss, spaz. I lost my little baby kitty (though he was hardly a baby, he was 17) two years ago. His sister just turned 17 this year. I know what you mean about having the greatest companions in the world (and about having so many stories to share). If you're still feeling sad, feel free to share one of those stories! I'd be happy just to listen!

Sending the best,

Jen
Okay here is one of my stories...

When I first got Buster and Trixie (they were my only animals). I paid for this training program. It said if you have two dogs, you tie one up at a tree or something and train them one at a time. It had you walk in a big square and stop at each corner of the square and have them sit. I tied up Buster first and did the training program with Trixie. All went well. So then I tied up Trixie and took Buster with me to train him. We made it to the second corner of the big square we were walking (this was all done in a local park).......at this point, I had only had them a couple of days, so I really had not got to know them well.

As I was trying to train Buster with Trixie tied to a tree nearby, Buster jumps on me, grabs my jacket in his mouth and starts growling. It scared me half to death. He does not let go of my jacket, but drags me....really drags me....he is a small dog, but he uses all his force to drag me........he dragged me back to where I had Trixie tied to the tree. As soon as I unhooked her from the tree, he let me go and all was fine. After that, I NEVER attempted to separate them again. He let me know, that no matter what, I was never to separate him from his sister. They both had such personalities.
