Slightly OT, but has anyone tried or use Magic Jack

I rarely if ever use my landline phone and would rather do away with the bill.

We have it for one of the lines where I work. Most of the time it works fine, but it has some serious issues. At least once a week, sometimes more, it drops a call while I am in the middle of talking. You have no idea until you can't hear anything on the other end of the line. It reboots itself sometimes OR does an update - if you are on the phone at the time, it just ends your call. Sometimes I have no dail tone, at that point, I need to unplug it and plug it back in. You can not do anything else on the computer while on the phone or it will cause lapses in the conversation. (This is the one that hooks directly to the computer.) I have also been told from people calling in that their calls sometimes never go through.

My sister has the one that does not require a computer. She experiences some of the same issues. On hers, if you are doing something else that is using your internet connection (downloading or something) you just hear clicks throughout the conversation.

80% of the time it is fine, but it is not 100% reliable based on my experience.

Would I ever buy it for myself - most likely not.
I have not, but my parents got it. They live down south, I live up north. Everytime I call I get a recording that says all the circuits are busy, try again later. I kept trying, never opened a circuit. Also, when I would get through it would drop calls, or when the internet is down, your phone is down. I know my parents said many times they would go to use it and have same issues...circuits busy etc.

I was really bummed, was wanting to get this but because it is not reliable I chose not too. sad smiley
Thanks for asking this question because I've also been considering majic jack. Don't think I will now!
I appreciate all of your responses so much - thank you!!!
I have used Magic Jack for several years and am happy with it. I did have some issues with it on an older computer but once I upgraded to a new PC it works fine. One nice feature is that I receive an email with an attached voicemail wav file for incoming calls if my computer is not turned on.
We've used one for a couple of years without any problems.
I, and several other users in my area, have investigated Magic Jack. I'm guessing the yeas and nays are about equal, which is far too low a satisfactory level for me; I MUST have reliable communication.
My mom has Magic Jack, because she lives in the middle of nowhere and her cell phone reception stinks.

It's ok. What's frustrating is that many times I'll call her and it will ring several times, finally going to voicemail....but this happens when my mom is standing right next to the phone, and it doesn't ring on her end. Not sure what that happens. It's only occasionally. Just enough to be frustrating.

Would I personally get Magic Jack? No. I got rid of my land land several years ago and strictly use my cell.
I have thought about getting one of these services everytime I get ready to pay my phone bill. ...Does anyone have another service they like better? A friend of mine has one called UMA that is sold at Costco. She says she gets dropped calls but I guess thinks the price differential is worth it. but that is only one review for that service. Anyone else?
I have the Verizon Home Connect service. It may cost a little bit more than the Magic Jacks, etc. but it is very reliable and no where near the cost of a landline. As a matter of fact, I can take the phone with me anywhere, including driving in my car, and have wireless phone service for a few hours before I need to charge it again. It's not as convenient as a smartphone, but I like it. No computer connection is needed either. The rep who sold me the phone told me a story where one of her elderly customers said she was in a major airport with her Home Connect service and she was talking on a regular trimline phone you'd get at Wal-Mart or something. She said people were looking at her and laughing. But I must admit I would do the same thing.
Now THAT would be funny. I'd have to get an old-fashioned desk phone to take with me, just for the effect. HA!
