MERRITT ISLAND -- Florida
A memorable Mother's Day rescue for some local firefighters.
It all started when a woman who lived on Hatfield Avenue noticed a mother duck frantically running back and forth to a storm drain Sunday morning.
When Brevard County Fire Rescue crews got there, they found five ducklings at the bottom of the storm drain. It took the jaws of life to get the grate open, but they eventually got into the drain and reached the ducklings.
As they started pulling them out, more appeared. Eight ducklings in all were returned to their mother, then the reunited family waddled away.
"Obviously this is not a run of the mill type of call," said Jeff Taylor, a spokesman for Brevard County Fire Rescue. "But what better day to reunite a family than Mothers Day? We have a happy family, and this is a great opportunity for our guys to do something a little out of the norm."
