Can you spot the BP station in this picture?

If I took this picture I could use it as an "overview?" (Actually, I drove by this station two days before the road was closed and offered to snap a few pics for them. They could not assign the shop because the computer would recognize that the paperwork was not sent yet. I explained that I could snap a few anyway, and was told they would just have to have it shopped later in the quarter. Okie-dokie!)

This is just off I-29 near Nebraksa City. It might be September before the Missouri River flooding dries up. The roads- including a stretch of the interstate- might not be functional before 2012.

Can you spot the Shell and Conoco-Phillips stations in this picture?

It is the same exit off the interstate as the other pic. Here are all the stations together:

And of course even when the flood waters recede/dry up it is likely that the stations will be closed for months. Unless their underground storage tanks are very new, the chance that water and mud has gotten in with the flooding means that they will probably need to be drained and cleaned before refilling. The pumps are probably electronic and probably need to be replaced. The water damage to the building may actually lead into it being condemned. I would not hold my breath waiting for the shops!
They took the pumps out of all three stations before the flood. They had several days' notice that the Army Corps of Engineers was going to release water from a dam in South Dakota. Before the water rushed in, the pumps were all gone and the buildings were sandbagged. All of these buildings were built since '93, when this happened the last time. Everything is concrete and I don't think there are basements. Even so, woodwork sheet rock, carpets.... yuck. And the interstate is completely submerged, so currents are likely washing it out from underneath.
Yes, no amount of sandbags are gonna keep the insides of those buildings dry. Hopefully they'll also pumped out their underground fuel tanks as well to prevent pollution and refilled them with water so they would not pop out of the ground. That water can then be pumped out after the floods and fuel brought in. Certainly nobody's idea of fun.
They did everything right. Residents, ahead of the evacuation, were advised to secure propane tanks and stuff for the same reason. There are houses that are only visible as rooftops, see.

Considering the amount of raw sewage that was being pumped in upsteam from Omaha, a little gasoline seems fairly light a threat.
Unfortunately, experience is the best teacher and there has been enough flooding over the years to figure out best practices. I hope you dry out soon.
My company was trying to send me up I-29 a few weeks ago. I had to cancel the site due to the flooding. I had them go to Snow Creek's facebook page, in Weston, and they were shocked of all the water. (I'm a medical and HIPPA chart auditor, in Kansas City). The company i work for are out of Mississippi, and have never seen me. I work from home, or do site visits.
If you need advice on a detour, let me know. (I'm in Clarinda IA.) Some of the US Highways (59 in particular) have become really, really scary with road rage, tailgating, speeding, unsafe passing.... It will only get worse once harvest starts and the combines are on the road, too.
Heartlandcanuck, are things drying out yet? I was thinking about your flooding when I was looking at the hurricane headed for the East Coast and just thinking what an odd wet/dry year this has been. As humans it is always 'wetter' or 'drier' than usual, but this year sort of takes the cake. My son is in TX where reservoirs and wells are drying up while IA and other areas have had extreme flooding. Weird.
