Oil change complaint

I'm sitting in the popular oil change, car wash place, having a new battery put in by the smog guy (not a job), and an elderly woman comes in shaking and complaining like crazy. I ask what happened, and she says she had a $26.99 coupon for an oil change, goes to pick up her car and cost is $40.00. I said,
you didn't have to put in a new oil filter (their upsell), and she says she wasn't asked, just happened. This has not happened to me, but then we sit there and have input.....is this really how they treat regular customers?

Some oil change places are notorious for doing add-ons: wiper blades, air filter, transmission flush/oil-flush.I am a mystery shopper, but I am also a p/t mechanic. Sometimes when I'm feeling lazy I will go to a oil change shop but you have to be aware and not let them charge you for things that are not needed.I would think these places take advantage of older folks and uninformed customers. Many times a trans-flush or oil-flush can do more harm than good by attacking the various seals and gaskets.
This reminds me of an oil change shop I did, first shop I did ever.

They were trying to check the air pressure, when they "accidently" broke off the tire stem.

The guy told me, "We'll just put the spare on, you can get it fixed and we'll pay for it."

Well, first of all I told him, I don't have the spare with me, and secondly, why should I be inconvenienced?

"Oh....okay, hold on..." Comes back after trying to get someone to tow the car somewhere to be fixed.

"Uh, we can't find anyone to tow it. Do you have AAA?"

Well, yes I do, but I only get 4 tows a year, I'm not going to waste one on your mistake.

"Oh...okay, hold on."

This went on for 1/2 hour, they finally found someone to tow it, and they drove me home.

They pick me up to get the car and the guy gets lost trying to find the tire repair place...almost missed picking up the car since they were closing soon.

I called the MSC, they voided the shop but paid me $5 for my trouble.

The oil change place had changed my oil and had not charged me.

I called the corporate office, and they sent me a gift certificate for a free oil change.

So, I guess it all worked out. smiling smiley
