The museums were all free when I went there a couple of years ago.

Contact the folks at CSE for opportunities at several free and for-fee locations in the area. Just remember, CSE is famous for being very, very strict with editing guidelines.

The few museums that do charge only have a nominal fee. I would suggest picking up F&B shops for any missing meals and enjoying the sights on your free time.

For me, the spy museum was the only thing I regretted paying for. Perhaps that had to do with being booked into the nearby hotel under an alias to begin with...
The museums of the Smithsonian are real treasures. I could literally spend weeks in them. There are truly museums for everyone. Years ago when my kids were about the right age for it, we spent about 10 days tent camping out in Falls Church, VA and driving into DC early each to get a parking space on the Mall to spend the day in the museums. We spent nearly a week in Air & Space alone.
