Good call barefoot, and thanks for the head’s up.
I’m not pleased about the turn of events lowballing talented ICs, but these are marketing companies, so it’s their job to turn a phrase in order to sell whatever they’re willing to trade thier souls for.
They’re just marketing. No different than the 16 ounce bags of coffee that are now 11-12 ounces with a rapidly rising price tag.
Good reminder to be a savvy shopper with our gigs, read between the lines, share the wisdom, and diversify.
The buyouts are creating cut throat monopolies reducing rates and taking longer to pay. Not good for IC’s. These entities will use up the newbies till they’re bankrupt and homeless without a car because they didn’t make enough maintain it running around doing any assignment that’s offered hoping for “loyalty†bonuses hoping, paying to work while the CEOs are laughing and vying another sports car we’ve paid for.
Meanwhile, I live in a previously thriving demographic in which talent is being laid off in favor of AI and people are cutting back on expenses, not buying new cars, houses, or even going out to lunch and getting spa treatments because the outlook is so uncertain.
The drop in sales isnt all due to poor service on the ground, it’s the result of decisions being made at the top and having lived through previous trickle downs that left our parents in dire straits.
The irony that companies who are supposed to be evaluating customer service for others treat the people they depend on to provide them with valuable data so poorly would be humorous if it weren’t so obvious that this trend is not sustainable.
It’s reality check time. Profit at any cost is not sustainable no matter how it’s packaged and knowing that ethic we need to expect a lot of glitz on the outside of a box of hot air. It’s the way the laws have been written.
I feel bad for those in the field becoming scapegoats. That includes those we are evaluating, ourselves, and schedulers who’ve worked with us for years who have to pitch this snake oil, many of whom are also IC’s. One even apologized off the record saying they’re very worried about their jobs.
The marketing to us is only going to get more interesting, and we need to make smart business decisions for our own well being.
I won’t pay to work or do any more out of pockets I have to wait weeks to get reimbursed for, or be bullied into working for promises of gift cards, expense write offs by a 3rd party we are not contracted with, or a few pennies 2 months later minus expenses and taxes, and neither would the ones creating these bass ackwards policies.
We can be creative too. It’s time.
