I’ve become aware of a vulnerability we all need to know about, as shoppers and human beings,
Reputable MSC’s, job posting resources (and others) are diligent about security, will never share/sell your personal data, and will only require access to your device functions required to do the job while you’re doing the job (or communicating or paying the game).
Please BE CAREFUL of lowball pay apps, job posting consolidators, “shopper education” offers, and newly updated ones.
Please read the fine print/terms and conditions carefully before providing any info, agreeing to, or downloading anything. Many require us to give them permission and access to unrelated device functions/data and to share/sell personal data when we download/create an account to access job content.
Data mining is VERY profitable. They offer us $1-15 jobs and can then sell our info for a lot more.
I discovered this concern after my ID theft service notified me that my personal info was recently put up for sale on the dark web. It removed the content and advised me to review any new downloads and check any new contracts/updates for potential loopholes as mentioned above.
This happened 4x in the last 4 months, or I’d not have shared this. We’re all having to diversify shopper strategies and agree to new updates. Each breach notification happened within 2-3 weeks of one on these changes.
I know from personal experience ID theft will mess you (and your family) up for a decade or more, which is why I pay a service to monitor my breaches. It far less expensive than the years of $$ recovery and credit healing.
I believe luring us in with an ulterior motive like access to jobs is known as “bait and switch,” but those who employ it have legal teams to create loopholes we agree to, banking on the trend that most of us don’t have the patience to read through the pages of often contradictory and confusing jargon.
Legally, it’s up to us to read the terms and conditions we’re agreeing to before we proceed with anything, because once we agree/download/create a profile, they can do whatever’s stated therein.
Additionally, almost all terms and conditions also include a waiver of (their) responsibility for possible legal and data breaches, and equally important, our consent to waive our legal rights to litigate (including class actions), and submit to arbitration (to their advantage, at our cost) with their legal team.
Also know that the “app stores” have also updated their terms and conditions to protect themselves similarly, to absolve themselves of legal responsibility for incorrect notifications concerning data usage and fraudulent apps/advertising//activity on their platforms.
As a shopper. you aren’t getting paid, or never get a reply from “support” or the alleged company you’re doing the job for, check your terms and conditions they’re required to share and what’s posted at the App Store.
I’ve reviewed my agreements, deleted the profiles (I could), notified the app admins in writing of my withdrawal of permissions and decision to close my account, and deleted the apps that leave me vulnerable. I can’t share which ones, because naming them on a public forum would make me vulnerable to an expensive defamation action (but a couple are mentioned in threads in this forum).
We’re living in chaotic times.
Please be careful and take the time to read the fine print for anything you may be considering and all you’ve agreed to, carefully, before you proceed.
Remember to protect yourself and choose what’s best for you and your family’s best interests, now and in the future.
The cost of not doing so now and later is far more than what you make doing side gigs.
