FENTON • Multiple fire companies responded Thursday night to a four-alarm fire at Maritz Inc., 1365 North Highway Drive off of Interstate 44 near Fenton.
No one was hurt and the fire was quickly extinguished; firefighters never saw flames but did find a smoldering area on the roof, officials said.
Central County Emergency 911 Dispatch received a call at 7:43 p.m. On arriving, firefighters reported finding smoke on the fourth floor. Additional fire companies were called in to fight the heavy smoke and prevent its spread on the Maritz campus.
At 9:45 p.m., firefighters were up on the roof and spraying water to cool down the structure.
A fire official at the scene said firefighters would be systematically checking each floor, and putting fans on each floor to help dissipate the smoke.
The building on the north side of I-44 is the research building on the 174-acre campus.
Michael Arnhart, fire chief of the High Ridge Fire protection distict, said his department got a call about 8:15 p.m.
Arnhart said there was a smoldering area on the roof of the research building. He said firefighters never saw flames, but they quickly put water on the building to knock down the smoke. He said there were about 75 firefighters on the scene.
Fewer than 30 people were evacuated from the building.
Maritz spokeswoman Jennifer Larsen said she was not sure workers could return to that building on Friday but that there are plenty of other locations on the corporate campus for them to work.
