The scammers whose checks will not be good.
There are shops that you can do where you don't have to spend any money and then wait for reimbursement. For example, most bank shops, apartment shops, most comic shops (Do they really ever sell an issue early?) most tobacco compliance shops (high probability they're not selling it to you without an ID) the HP Ink Shops (if you use their app). Others' can think of more.
Adding to your list

New car inquires
Electronic shops such as bestbuy
Most fitness shops where you tour the facility
College tours
Those price audit shops
Some thrift store shops

Spies in Disguise and Amusement Advantage sent me gift cards or free passes to be used in my shops, prior to the shop, so that I did not have to spend my own money up front. Bu e careful some of these shops have big reporting requirements and if you don't have a reimbursement coming you may give up on the assignment.

Try jobs that do not involve a reimbursement. Cell phone shops, bank shops, storage facilities, etc or jobs for things you would purchase anyways like grocery stores, gas stations or post offices.

I think tamden was just wanting to know what companies have shops where there are no out of pocket expenses. Tamden, Try Ellis Property Management for apartment shops and Maritz or Ath Power for bank shops. Try Trendsource Trendsource for electronics shops and Marketforce for cell phone shops.
Im thinking about doing mystery shops in my town & posible near by cities I live in Ca on the Central Coast. 805 area any advise on which MS company to sign up with, I see that they require alot of personal info, I dont want to give out info like that to the wrong people.
I would not bet on tobacco or alcohol compliance shops...Selling without checking ID is way too common....

Hard work builds character and homework is good for your soul.
Stick to companies that are members of MSPA as you get going as they have all been vetted. Unfortunately clients change MSC's frequently and a company with work in your area might not tomorrow - and vice-versa. The companies do need the personal information so that they can pay you and match you to shops that require certain demographics.
