New to forum and MS

Hello! I discovered MS in June of this year on a whim and because I could use the extra income. I didn't expect to enjoy the shop as much as I did. I live the Quad Cities, a combination of small metropolitan and farming communities on the border of Illinois and Iowa. I am pleasantly surprised by the number of shops available in this area, and I will be steadily adding to the list of companies I can choose shops from. I am currently registered with five companies - Maritz, Trendsource, See Level, Norton Norris, and Sentry.

I wish I lived on the border of a few states. It seems neat that you can travel back and forth to do shops.
It is not always what it is cracked up to be.

Everytime I go down to Cincinnati I think how cool it is to go over the Ohio River into Kentucky. I don't know why I love border crossings so much, but they are especially fascinating when there is a river involved. I used to feel the same way about border crossing into Mexico and Canada before 9/11. It used to be easy and fun, now it's a PITA. But I still love crossing state lines.
It's the same crossing from Oregon to Washington over the Columbia river; so cool. I drove to Florida earlier this year (20 hour drive!) and I think I drove over a river from one state to another, was it Mississippi? Three months after I got back home I had a ticket for traveling on some toll road in Texas for $3.75; freaked me out pretty good as I thought I had maybe run through a toll booth and didn't remember doing that. I do remember having to pee pretty bad in Texas because there wasn't a stop close by. tmi?
There is no direct route from me to the areas needing to be shopped. Even with eight bridges over the Mississippi traffic is usually a nightmare.

I would love to go to both Oregon and Washington. Spicy, Texas is a weird state. They have a lot of toll roads in some of the cities but no toll booths. I am surprised you didn't get an out-of-state charge. I fly to Texas once a year and rent a car there. When I was in Austin last year I accidentally got on a toll road for about 2 miles before I realized it and got off. It cost me around $16 I think because of an out-of-state driver charge. The actual toll was just a few bucks.

I would be confused by 8 bridges, Lisa. I went to Pittsburgh earlier this year and loved that city, they have several bridges and 3 rivers run through the city. It's just a neat city to visit, but traffic at certain times is just crazy.
So I am sorry for hijacking your thread, avarens. I bet Marketforce has shops in your area as well. Welcome to the forum!
JAS, those were the ones I counted going over the Mississippi to Illinois. There are five more to cross the Missouri and four or five to cross the Meramec river to get from St. Louis to the rest of the statesmiling smiley

Lisa, you take for granted something that is amazingly cool. Except the traffic part.
Now that I think about it, I've lived on the border ( I like to think of it as living on the edge lol) of each of the locations I have moved to - Oregon/Washington, Illinois/Indiana, and now Illinois/Iowa. Must be something to it. I have to agree with Lisa about traffic, but that is the great thing about living in the Quad Cities - very little traffic compared to St. Louis or Chicago. I do agree with the coolness factor of bridge travel, especially when the rivers are large. I grew up on the Mississippi and have a difficult time accepting some 'streams' as rivers! Besides, it may be a bit dorky, but I really enjoy hearing Siri announce "Welcome to Iowa" every time I hit the mid point of the I-74 bridge.
I wonder if there is a connection to people who do mystery shopping and the fondness of border travel (except Lisa, but she's an anomaly in many ways, LOL)? No, not dorky. I didn't know Siri made announcements when you travel. I have an Android but my husband has an Apple phone...where is the setting for that? Living on the edge--clever. I have never even been to Washington state and Oregon, but I have had friends who did. I know I would like it. One of my sisters lives in Northern California so I think I might have to make a bucket list trip and go out there, then take a train up...might as well take the train all the way up into BC while I am at it. I am sure there is a train that goes up and into Vancouver, right?
I have been smiling at the idea of river crossings being so special. In the DMV (District, Maryland, Virginia) region there are only 2 useful crossings of the Potomac River unless one starts in downtown DC and just needs to go to the close VA suburbs (aka NVA).. We all groan when forced to use either of the two major bridges. The traffic congestion is so horrible that any fun has been beaten out of locals. Perhaps we also take the crossings from central DC to NVA so for granted because DC is such a strange concept, a city that should be a state and is not.

You need a boat to go across the Potomac, LOL. I was born at Andrews AFB but we didn't live in Arlington for very long. My sister had a house there for a couple of years and I had a friend who's husband was stationed at the Army base there (can't remember the name). My husband's Aunt has a condo on the bay, and she doesn't mind the traffic but she drives like an idiot, so she fits right in, LOL. Traffic was horrendous anytime I went there. I would say that the traffic in DC ranks right up there with the traffic in Chicago and Boston. I imagine you are constantly asking yourself while driving, "Where did that person get their driver's license?"
I am now even more excited after reading this...Sept., I will be flying to Portland and staying in Vancouver, WA, then driving to Ashland, Ore., for the Shakesphere Festival. Looking at the computer WA. is gorgeous. love colder weather and water, don't care about border crossing, never thought about it. Being young many crossed to Mexico for shopping, no more....we now stay in San Diego....which is a great city, my good friend recently moved there and I have an open invite, thinking at some point to take Amtrack down. Enough to do for now.

JAS, the boat that you want is White's Ferry, which has been crossing the Potomac for so long that Lee's troops used it to invade MD and PA, twice.

JAS, maybe after doing it for so long any excitement has worn off. Not to mention, I really do not like the part of Illinois directly across the river from me. It is flat, spread out and a general PITA to drive around. For a state on the verge of going broke, they have almost every highway in some stage of construction.

Lisa,
In the case of Illinois, that is "in some stage of destruction."

Wales, I was thinking more along the lines of the little rowboat that George Washington used, LOL. But the ferry actually sounds quite nice. Lisa, you are describing the roads in Ohio. The state motto is: "Under Construction" and our mascot is the orange barrel. At least in DC the heavily trafficked roads are mostly in good condition.
Irene, that sounds like a fun trip. I love theater and I bet the Shakespeare Festival will be really interesting. How long is your trip?

I met a lady when in Mexico on my last winter vacation who lives in Vancouver, BC on Vancouver Island. She invited us to come visit, so I really do think I will go visit my sister and get her to go up with me, maybe stop for a few days here and there in Oregon and Washington on the way.
Lisa, many people find the geography of Illinois to be unappealing, although there ARE some magnificent treasures here if seek them out. At least our state is centrally located to the rest of the USA? Lol. And it's been in some stage of destruction since the beginning I think. Oh well. It's home lol and I can always look fondly across the Mississippi at Iowa!

Jas - I don't think it's a setting in Siri. When you use the gps (Apple or google) it just announces it.

Irene - you will have an amazing trip! I have heard wonderful things about the Shakespeare festival although I have attended myself. But if you are a scenery junkie as I am, you can't go wrong with the Pacific Northwest. It is simply amazing. And the smell! It even smells green. It's divine.
Avarens, I've been all over Illinois. There are definitely some great areas, just not close to me, LOL. I really enjoyed the scenery driving across the northern part of the state from Davenport to the northwestern suburbs of Chicago.

I loved Chicago the few times I have visited. Of course it was by the lake and along the river where all of the cool restaurants, bars, and shopping are located. That's pretty much the extent of my knowledge of Illinois cities.
I only stay in the W. Loop of Chicago, love the River area as well as Lakeshore Dr., shopping, food, sports, has a bit of everything, but wouldn't venture to the South side, and not a lover of the Subs., except Evanston where Jill went to college, we walk a lot...weather aside, it is a great city to visit. Uber all the way.. I'll be in the Pacific Northwest 10 days, the Shakespeare Festival is a 7 hour drive from where I'll be.....never been to that part of the country, but hear it's gorgeous. The Festival runs thru Oct....my friend goes yearly, so knows his way around.
Talk about Il., and construction, Los Angeles has two seasons, summer and construction. PITA
