Hi I want to become a mystery shopper, but I afraid of scams. How do you tell the legitimate one from the crooks, and what some of the companies that you guys work for, and what has been your experience?
Welcome to the forum, jbhawkin! There's a list of legitimate companies on this forum. You'll find a list of 200+ under the section titled Mystery Shopping Company Discussion. All the members of this forum work for companies individually chosen for different reasons - fun, fee, beneficial reimbursement, etc. Reading the forum will help answer your questions. (It may take some time, we're a talkative bunch.)
There is a list of legitimate companies here in the first post of the first thread of the Mystery Shopping Company Discussion section of the forum. Common sense keeps you from being the victim of scams--if someone finds you with job offers, how did they find you? Did you sign up with them? Did someone you work with refer them?; Are they offering to pay too much? Most real shopper jobs when you first start working with a company pay a fee in the range of $10-15.; Are they reimbursing too much? Except for restaurant shops and hotel shops you rarely will be reimbursed more than $5-10.; Are you being asked to provide a lot of personal sensitive information through an email? Most legitimate companies have a website where you register, get your assignments and enter your reports.; Are they paying you up front for your work before you even agree to work with them? Definitely scam. Don't even deposit the check because eventually it will bounce.; Are they asking you to wire transfer 'extra money' at the end of your job somewhere? Definite scam--run like heck.
Any questions I have I always come here first now. Do a search on a company or a question and you can bet someone has an answer for you! I just love this forum and these people. They have helped so much since I started just a few months ago.
