Hi Debra... welcome to the wild and wacky world of mystery shopping! :-D

Sounds like you are off to a good start. Tons of other companies out there, so be sure to set aside a bit of time each day to register for new ones so you can get more shops.

I think the amount of time required to register is the most daunting thing for people who are new, and one of the things that has kept my potential referrals from following through.

It would be really cool if all the companies in the MSPA could agree on a standard application form that potential shoppers could complete and submit everywhere.

Obviously some companies need to see writing examples and possibly other non-standard information, but that could be done with a follow-up.

It would make things SO much easier to get going, whether one is new or wants to sign up for a new company.

I copied and pasted the "Official list of Mystery Shopping Companies" into an Excel spread sheet, parsed it (put it into columns) so that the number of discussions was in a separate column. Pretty easy to do.

Then I sorted them by the number of discussions for each company.

I then started signing up with the companies that had the most "discussions". I figured the higher the number, they either had more shops or problems that people were talking about.

It took me about 5 minutes to get the Excel spreadsheet to where it needed to be. Signing up for the companies took much longer but I felt it would have taken even longer if I had signed up for companies that didn't have many shops.

Hi everyone, im Annette from texas, im new by the way if you hadnt already noticed i would like to know how do you tell if a job is legit ? I have received several that were scams but the one that really took me aback was the one i got last week it was sent the usual way but instead of a cashiers check that was sent it was in the way of a postal money order which naturlly i took to my bank which they were not sure if the money order was legit or not its the first ive seen where a bank couldnt tell and suggested to take to the post office which i did . two of the workers said yes that it was and was even going to cash it but didnt have enough cash in which case they went to another employer and he said it wasnt real and that if i cashed it they would come after me for the money he never said what caused him to decide that it was fake so im still curious of why ? And if it isnt then it should really be made aware to others before they become victims of money order fraud. I would appreciate any feed back you can give. Thanks. Annette312

Hi Annette, the first clue: companies don't pay in advance for work that hasn't been completed yet. And why would anyone send a large amount of money to a complete stranger? Did you sign up and fill out an online application on a secure website (not via email or text)? Were you given a username and password to access the website when you registered so that you could view the job board to apply for a shop? Here's how that works: after being assigned a shop, you are able to access the instructions and the report form on the website. This website is the same place you submit the report, filling it in online. After an editor reviews the report, if it is accepted, it is sent to the client. You get paid usually 2-4 weeks later. The average mystery shop pays about $15. Please do not deposit or cash that check. It is a fraud and someone is trying to scam you.
