Good company to start merchandising?

Any advice on companies that offer merchandising that are willing to take newbies? I do have retail experience but it's been a number of years. TIA

I LIVE IN TUSCALOOSA, ALABAMA, DOES ANYONE KNOW OF COMPANIES HIRING HERE IN MY AREA OFF THE TOPS OF YOUR HEADS?
I'm semi-retired but need the extra income so applied a little over a year ago with American Greetings. They hired me right away and I had no merchandising or retail experience. All their merchandisers are part-time and my hours vary each week, anywhere from 8 to 37 hrs...avg. is about 15) but most of the time I can set my own schedule for the week. It also leaves me time for mystery shopping too. I love it!!
I started with Certified and Pat Henry and a couple of demo companies which are no longer around.
I started with Certified now MarketForce Purple portal 2006. Now I do not take any job for the $8.00. When they call me to do a job I ask the following question to figure my required pay.

How many pages are the guidelines? - calculate how much paper ane read time is involved.
What is their estimated time in store? - I am nowhere near as fast as their time estimate
I also want to hear an overview of the job - If there is an inventory, reporting could be long.
I also request distance pay.

The Walmart balloon printing was more than 30 pages plus they wanted a store pre-call. So I request $14 to 30 per assignment.

I know they only want to pay for in store time, so I take the directions to store and read them there in store. They are getting the printing time free. I need to get paid for all my time or the job is not worth it.
We have openings coming up all over the USA ... and a few right now. We hire IC reps only.

I have worked with Keystone - post just above.
They are fair and pay on time.
Instructions are clear and they understand if an occasional job requires extra time. Weekly or twice weekly visits/reports usually mean that you can easily complete the task as assigned. They require a short weekly commitment and monthly inventory. They require before and after photos and a very short report. Some assignments require set up and tear down but the work is minimal. The jobs I have done required maintaining a store fixture with inventory, setting it to plan and neatening up.

I recommend them highly and am looking forward to my next assignment starting next week or as soon as the store gets its pallet.

I know keystone operates roadshows but they also have seasonal fixtures in stores. I recently turned down a roadshow from them (for mileage purposes) but am starting a seasonal job where I will maintain a fixture in the store and make 1 or 2 weekly visits keeping it full and neat, reporting on what is selling and inform them if stock is running low.

If you can get several merchandising companies with fixtures in the same store or area it can be quite profitable.

Taking this question a step further, does anyone know of a company that would hire for three month increments then let you transfer to another state or area? My husband & I love to travel and full time in a 40' motor home. I am looking for additional ways to earn fuel monies and thought about in store demos or light merchandising. I am a young 62 year old in excellent health but I am not sure I could physically handle some merchandising jobs that I've seen while researching.
Hey gmom,
Demo work is strong with Advantage Sales and Marketing, and Chuck Latham Associates is hiring for "Pet Nutrition Consultants" on the week ends. I do not do any demo work, but get these emails from NARMS regularly. You usually do have to take a safe food handling class before any food demo work. Love your idea to work and travel.
Jacksonville Florida- HDA Merchandising & Franklin Retail Solutions are hiring part-time merchandisers
Make you you sign up with NARMS and fill out a profile so you can get emails of opening in your area.
Nice people, make sure you are up to speed with your tech skills. Huge variety of work, everything from cut ins to resets. When you fill out your application, check off which kind of work you want , project, overnights, reset, new store, etc. Good luck

Hi everyone! Can someone please explain to me what merchandising is? I just got an email to sign up with a company but they didn't give me any details on what merchandising entails.

I would be curious/cautious about any company that sends you an email out of the blue. So many scams right now.
If it is legit, it all depends on the company. Some do huge cosmetic resets, some do small quick audits, some specialize in new store set ups and remodels. Some do cycle work for magazines and cards. The variety is almost endless. I would do a search on the forum and the internet before you sign up with anyone. This is a great time for work as it's the Xmas rush. It will drop off right before Christmas. It picks up again in early spring.

There is a thread in this forum headed " What is merchandising" read the threads and you will get a pretty good idea.
