Deleting Repeat Spammers

Spam seems to be down since Jacob implemented the "Report" feature. It's so easy to report spam and the moderators zips right in and deletes it.

One thing I have noticed is that we have many REPEAT spammers. Some have been here for a long time. I'm guessing that is because mods can delete a thread or post but only Jacob can deactivate a poster. So spammer's posts are deleted but they keep coming back. Maybe it would be good to have a button for moderators to report a repeat spam-offender to Jacob for deactivation.

This one today:

This one has been around since 2011 and drops in periodically to spam us. All of her 17 posts have been deleted. It would be nice to be able to report a repeat-spammer after a certain number of spam posts. Three? Five? Certainly after seventeen posts, all spam, it's pretty clear that the only contribution this poster is making is spam.

I agree. There definitely should be a way for moderator's disable spammer accounts.

I just added it to my to-do list!
Yeah, the repeaters are really, really *really* annoying!!

Especially when they come in here, like last night? And leave six or seven or eight spams, all over the place, all at once.

It's like coming home and finding out the dogs emptied all your trash cans and chewed up all the kleen-x's and now everything's all over the floor. grinning smiley

Yes, I agree that spam is down. Efforts of those who report spam and the moderators to remove it should be applauded. smiling smiley

Can we get owreyfordolym deleted please? 12 posts - all spam

Also, Loveit just joined. First 3 messages all spam - something about cash back. Now they have started a thread in general chat about saving money which will probably turn into spam.

I don't understand why only a spammer's posts are deleted. Why not delete the account? Are member numbers important for some reason? Are they needed for securing more advertisers/revenue? If not, it would cut down on the work if the member's account was zapped along with the posts, right?

Probably because it's the moderators who delete the spam and not Jacob. In a post he made farther up this page he said "There definitely should be a way for moderator's disable spammer accounts."

The last one I posted in this thread (and flagged) was still here a couple of days after I reported it. Can say for last night because I didn't look. And LoveIt still has that thread in general chat. Their first 3 posts were page-long spams

Personally, I would love that button. I usually log in at night after work (around 4am) and that's when they seem to be the most active.

Kim
Probably because most of them are in Nigeria or somewhere on the other side of the world.

Time to build a bigger bridge.
And he was back today. Please ban this one!

It's been done for a while now.

Oh good. So the repeat spammer that was referenced a few posts above should have been deleted, right?

I'm really getting tired of the spammers and the trolls.

What if all new members had to have their first 5-10 posts approved by a mod before actually showing up? Is that possible? Wouldn't that nip this nonsense in the bud?

LJ, I believe it would take some planning to make that work. If there were no time frame on the first five to ten posts, it wouldn't work at all. A troll could come on stream, immediately make five or ten acceptable posts, and then be off and running amuk in no time flat. Same old problem. I agree with you wholeheartedly, though. The same old snake popping up over and over with a new name is sure getting old. I'd personally like to see repeat whiners removed but that's just me.

You're right about the ones hell-bent on trolling, but what about the spammers? I think they'd move on quickly to a new forum and the same goes for the trolls that just get flamed quickly and post without thinking. You know, the trolls who flare up like a hemorrhoid and can be easily be soothed with a little Preparation M(oderator).

LJ,

That's what I thought about the spammers - they would move if they were banned from posting. I get on at night when there seems to be a lot of spammer activity. I see some spammers that have been reported still logging on - that's why I asked what I did above if the moderators have the ability to disable spammers accounts. The one that I referenced above still logs in regularly and so does designer gowns. They must really like us. I bet it was the stupid thread.

Kim
That must have been it, Kim. LOL
At least there's a silver lining. Getting annoyed here has caused me to spend more time in my old forum I had been neglecting. For some reason, I have never seen spam there. I don't know how they do it.

I wonder if they mistake Mystery SHOPPING forum for a bunch of people who like to shop and get deals so they spam it. I don't know.

Kim
I think that's what's going on. This forum is open to the public and crawled by the google bots so anyone googling "shopping" or "shop" will find us. Google "shopping forum" and we are the second item on the list.

Time to build a bigger bridge.
