Forum Hijack

I pay $10.00 a year to a car forum. No ads. Well worth it to keep the forum costs down. I would pay to keep this great forum going. smiling smiley

Yeah but who gets the $$ - the people who contribute to the forum or the person who owns it?

The person who owns it.

.....and the person who pays all of the costs associated with keeping the forum running.

I intend to live forever. So far, so good.
I'm in a couple of "free" forums. In one, people kick in money now and then to keep it ad-free. We get a certain number of page views or 30 days, whichever comes first, ad-free for $7. Another group I'm in on the same platform, we get the ads, but I never see them because of a browser extension that blocks ads.

If Jacob wanted to impose some kind of mandatory or even voluntary membership "fee" to support the forum, I would pay it. i'd probably still be doing FF shops for $5 if I hadn't come here in my second month of shopping and learned it was okay to ask for bonuses. Probably 3/4 of my $8000+ MS earnings came from that one tip. Until I heard that, I thought the price you saw on the job board was all there was.

Pay-to-belong forums are unappealing to me. No exceptions. Likewise, I do not pay to avoid ads on email accounts.
Mandatory pay-to-belong *is* unappealing. However, having an option there? What's wrong with that? I pay a nominal annual fee to be able to enjoy a couple of online things ad-free, including my personal email.

And yeah, the money would go to the person who owns it ~ that's the person who incurs the costs of running the place.

I'd rather pay a few bucks than see ads. I never click on internet ads anyway so why look at them? I don't even click them if I'm interested in the product. I'll find another way to find the company by googling to find their website. You never know where those ad links are really leading until you click them.

I never sign in with Facebook either. They always think they need to have access to my friends list. uh... I don't think so. Not their business who my friends are, nor is it their business where else I might ever have signed in with Facebook. Too many people know too much about too many other people.

I should have mentioned the $10 I pay once a year gives me the ability to upload attachments from my computer and gives me more of a status there. I am taken more seriously, hahahaha..... My title is: Master Mechanic! tongue sticking out smiley

It is not mandatory to pay. I don't have to. I chose to pay. It supports the forum and I don't have to look at flashing car ads in my face. smiling smiley
I love the idea of the option to pay to avoid ads.

I love seeing the ads. They let me know that after all the years of hard work Jacob put in, this website is finally banging on all cylinders.

Sometimes the ads are pretty funny, too... the topic of the ad that comes up, based on what 'it' *thinks* the subject of conversation is. smiling smiley

In a group I was in, we would try to bait the google bot by mentioning unlikely subjects like kangaroos or bed wetting just to see what ads came up in response.

Sounds like a great game we could add to General Chatsmiling smiley

And I'm way too cheap to pay even a few bucks to get rid of the ads. They are so easy to ignore.

Lisa,
Adblock plus is free. Not that I want to deny someone getting revenue from ads but I have noticed that in the past few months, the pages of this forum take longer to load. If I don't wait, I could mouse over the first topic to click on but after the page loaded it would be an ad because the thread dropped down. I just spent a lot of time getting rid of a virus on my machine (had to wipe it clean because several malware and virus programs failed to get rid of it) that I got from clicking an ad. Then when someone posted here about getting some kind of weird re-direct I thought "Uh oh, not again."

Ugh! I'm being hijacked again. This is what I got this time:

Still happening, but not as frequently as before. Anyone else?

Not since the first time it came up. I took the advice, it may have been kimmie's, and cleared my browser cache. Seems to have done the trick for now.

@LJ --

yikes. This is very frustrating. The next time it happens, can you copy the entire URL and send it to me via Private Message. That way I should be able to block the ad.

Thank you!

If this is happening to anyone else, please let me know!
Will do. Thanks.

There are other ways to hijack a thread besides ads.

There was thread about LisaSTL's interview. It started out nice, with people complimenting those involved. It was resurrected by a new poster who was there to learn and ask questions. Apparently someone decided to post something offensive and that post was deleted (I don't know who or what and I don't care). Now, all that is left is a bunch of posts arguing with the original offensive post that is no longer there. People are calling each other bullies or trolls yes-men or proudly claiming to be one or the other and none of it makes sense! If a mod is going to delete an offensive post, can we please delete all the snarky replies that are probably just as bad and don't make sense anyway? The thread has been reduced to a playground scuffle where everyone just needs a time out. It isn't fair to Jacob Jans who started the thread, LisaSTL who took the time to do the interview and offer her advice, or Stilllearning who wrote the article. The deserve more respect than that. You should just go back to the recent nice post by the newbie and nuke the whole damn thing after that.
