Forum Ads

I 100% support the use of advertising to pay for this site; however, do you have any veto power over certain ads? The ones I find particularly offensive are those that attempt to deceive the user into clicking on their link, such as this one:

It frequently appears at the very top of the page and looks as if it might be a forum control button. I don't know where the link would actually take me since I didn't click on it, but I can barely read the words "InboxNow" in the upper right and am assuming it is some sort of email service.

I really dislike hijacking type ads.

Amen to that. It infuriates me how many people/companies cannot seem to do business without tricking and lying to people. Whatever happened to the idea of making an *honest* living?

Time to build a bigger bridge.
Ughhh. I've blocked ads like that on several occasions. They keep popping up. I'll block them again. Please let me know if they're still here tomorrow.
BTW, that is actually a link that can be clicked on in LJ's post.

Never try to teach a pig to sing. It's a waste of your time and it really annoys the pig.
Thanks Jacob.
Lisa, the link is the same as any photo we post - it's to the hosting site of the pic. In this case, it's photobucket.

Watch out for those Clean Your PC pop ups. They have a terrible virus that took me days to get rid off on my PC. After that I do not click on any adds or pop ups.
Aww, Teriraia, I've heard that and I'm so sorry it happened to you. Thank you for sharing your experience; maybe it will prevent someone else from making that mistake.

Okay, that ad or one similar is back because I clicked it by mistake when I was aiming for my back-browser button and hit my clicker too soon.

It took me to a site that said "You're missing a tool to read your messages. Download now." I hope some unsuspecting forum member who is new to all this doesn't think it's part of the forum and download malware.

Jacob, is there anything you can do?

I fully support the site having ads too, but can we get rid of the video ads? I'm seeing them a couple times a day and whenever I load a page with video, I scroll down to read and for some reason Edge moves me back up to the video. Perhaps it's a browser problem but it doesn't do it on static ads, only video. I just end up refreshing the page until the video ad goes away. Quite annoying.

I've never gotten the video ads. Not complaining!! But, is it due to OS, browser, ad block settings. . . ?
Once I disabled Adobe Shockwave Flash I stopped getting the videos. They were slowing the performance of the forum to a snail's pace.
@JacobJ I'm curious if revenue form the adds is still received for users that have ad-blockers installed.

Do the adds have to appear for them to generate a payment?
Products such as I think it is Ghostery would suggest that you not block ads from sites you frequent that rely on the ad income to continue. So it was certainly with that in mind that I allowed the videos to run as long as I could tolerate them, but when I'm getting angry with the computer because it is running so slowly, the balance certainly tips towards eliminating the videos and leaving the rest.
I would encourage everyone to disable Shockwave Flash. It currently isn't possible to just disable video ads. I'm looking into it. I did manage to disable some, however, not all. If you post the domain name of the advertiser, I can block them on an individual basis.

@SteveSoCal -- yes, the forum only gets paid if the ads are shown.
I just got one for xfinity

Fortunately, I have not experienced the videos. I have been asked how to disable Shockwave Flash, and have no clue. Posting instructions here would be appreciated.
I currently am using Internet Explorer 11 for the forum. There is a gear wheel in the upper right hand corner of the screen. The drop down takes you to Internet Options. In that, go to the Programs Tab and then to Manage Add-Ons. In Toolbars and Extensions you should see the Shockwave Flash. If it is 'Enabled', click on it and you will be given an option to disable it.
Mert, this is different for different browsers. If you don't use IE, I suggest you google it for your browser.

Also, doing this will reduce the browser's ability to fully show sites that use Shockwave Flash. If you need it for another site that needs to use Shockwave Flash that may not be a great idea. How to tell? If you disable it you will be told when you come across one that needs it. Then you can enable it again if you like.

But if you have not seen the videos, why implement a cure for a non-existent problem?

Happily shopping Rhode Island and nearby Massachusetts and Connecticut
Thanks, Flash and Vlade. Vlade, your point is well taken. If it's not broke, don't fix it! However, the information was not for me.
I've only seen a couple of video ads, but they were very annoying. I was reading, when suddenly it scrolled up to the top for the ad (I use Chrome). I scrolled back down and .. zip! I was back at the top again looking at the blasted ad again. It's beyond annoying, but luckily the videos have been a rarity for me.

Even worse, when I had only 15 gigs of Internet a month with Dish Internet, videos ate into that fast. So ads that automatically play on any site infuriated me. I often have my sound off and there were times on other sites that videos were playing in the background and I didn't even know it. I now have unlimited data, but I know not everyone else does. I don't mind video ads, but if they automatically launch, then that's a HUGE pet peeve of mine.

Stepping off my soapbox now. smiling smiley

Yep, same thing happens for me. Browser keeps returning to the top for the video.
Just had one for Home Depot.
