Security Reminder

A certain established member on this forum, took it upon themselves to locate my IP address and then post hints to my whereabouts based on the information gathered.

After reporting the incident to the moderator, the offending post was promptly removed.

I haven't published the offender's name but if anyone is concerned about a breach of security, PM me and I will indicate who the offender is. If I get an apology from the person in question, I will forget the whole incident.

I won't be posting again in public forums on this website.

P.S. The offender doesn't have a similar name to the one I have been posting under. The poster appears to be female.

I missed where this happened but if you have a concern regarding another member, it's best to take it up with the forum's owner, Jacob by sending him a PM. His user name is JacobJ.

Kim
JacobJ sorted it out. I just posted this message as a reminder to people to be careful about who accesses their data.

The person I'm talking about knew very specific information about my exact location despite the fact I have posted no information whatsoever about it. (I had only made one post on this website, with no information about my location). It felt a bit sinister that she would bother gathering the information then post a message so that I knew she that she knew exactly where I was. It is stalker territory.
I'm confused. With only one rather innocuous post before this thread, why would anyone be motivated to find out who you are or where you live?

i assumed op live in park city utah but i dont care where any members live. it doesnt affect me at all.
I don't live in Park City.

Let's say I live near Fisherman's Wharf. She quoted my comment then said something like; "How are the crabs on Fisherman's Wharf these days?" Except I live in a place where 99.99 percent of posters on this website have never been. There is no way it was a lucky guess. She made a point of making a specific exact reference to where I was. A million in one chance of guessing my exact location?

The person somehow located my IP address from this website. I am not a techie so I can't explian it. I just hope she isn't a moderator of some sort.

Sorry, but it's oddly unrealistic to say virtually nobody has been to near where you live. Unless of course you live on a farm in the middle of nowheresmiling smiley

Back to my question. You made a simple comment about a burger shop. What in the world would then prompt someone to hunt you down?

I'm not sure how anyone can get your IP from posts on the forum unless they have administrative access. Even PMs don't show show the header that contains the IP. And IPs are very general, I just looked up my own IP and it listed a town that's about 7 miles from me. It gave the lat/long addresses and they correspond to a town slightly further away. Very odd. Any chance you met this person at a trade show, or know her through a third party??

Because she is crazy? Hence the warning from me.
I doubt someone picked you out of hundreds over one post. If so, we would have heard of complaints from others by now. Perhaps it was posts under another user name?

ChrisCooper,
To answer your question. That is what I am concerned about. This person might have administrative access. If she is using people's data in an inappropriate way, her status needs to be reviewed.

I would appreciate a comment from Jacob on this.

PS. I don't know any other mystery shoppers and have never been to a trade show.

I believe you and it scares me as well. My question would be how does anyone get our last name from this forum, wouldn't they need that to look you up. I am sorry that happened and it makes me feel no one is safe.
Which thread did you write on, must have been the tanning bed...I think it important you talk about it, just as a warning to others to not look forum members up or try to get information on them.

When the going gets tough, the tough go shopping....
ChrisCooper, my IP address regularly puts me in the wrong area. Could it be based on the Internet provider? In the early days of caller ID, when cell phones were not recognized, my cell number would list a town even farther away. All phone numbers sharing the same exchange showed as being from that town.

Hmmm...this is puzzling. PCB is still posting under the old name, so now TPCB is the same person ? I find it odd that Park City Brian would change his name to this.
There was a thread recently where someone called out anonymous users, PCB in particular, which at the time I thought was weird since his username contained a city and first name. Cannot remember the thread and hopefully it's been removed if someone was outing another poster. That's intimidating for sure. Sorry it happened to you tPCB wherever you are.
Doesn't it strike you this name may be more of a slam at PCB? Maybe the OP took issue with something PCB posted. Not that it would be a surprise since so many take issue with PCB, LOL!

The thread is titled 'Darn!' - the offending post has been removed.
I think PCB just changed his name for reasons he said, and posted to warn others. I totally believe him, why wouldn't anyone? Stalkers are all over the computer and so are nosy people....we've had our share on here.

Yes. I chose the name as a joke with reference to PCB as he seems to be some kind of legend on these boards.
That was odd. The person who called out PCB had a completely anonymous user name. It would be like someone saying mine is anonymous. Sure, I don't post my last name, but a lot of members and most MSCs know who I am. On my name tag at the IMSC conference both this and my real name were listed, plus my real name is part of the email address I used for mystery shopping.

This isn't ParkCityBrian. It is someone else who thought it would be a funny take on PCB's user name.

IPs are deliberately vague. A subpoena is needed to associate an IP with a specific user. That's why I wonder if the posters know each other.
Anyway, I don't feel under any direct threat. I haven't given any information to this website such as my real email address or phone number.

But it spooked me to find out that I could be located so easily.

As mentioned earlier, if this person has access to other people's information, her status needs to be reviewed. Misusing data is a serious matter.
There is so much conflicting info. TPCB's post above says non-identifying email and phone number were used to create forum account. No one on forum can "pinpoint" his location using an IP. Even if the IP is registered it identifies a business or organization, but still not a specific person. Waiting for Jacob to weigh in....

ETA: clarified the post i was referring to

All I said was the person has pinpointed my location. And then made a point of posting about it.

I am 100 percent sure I am the only registered user from the place I registered at. This is why it was a shock to see what she wrote. I explained this to Jacob when I reported the post.
I'm guessing you posted something about your location with your other user name. A lot of people edit their post numerous times then assume nobody saw or remembered anything about the original post. Anyone following the forum would then be able to put two and two together without resorting to technology. Most folks don't realize their attempt at being clever by creating a new user name can actually be quite obvious.

I haven't posted under another user name. I don't post identifying things about myself anywhere on the Internet.

I don't have a footprint on the Internet. I don't do social media.
