Forum Updates Are Here!

Hello everyone! I'm working on updating the forum software. This means there may be bugs and/or other problems that crop up, but also that it will work better in the long run.

I've also removed many of the ads from the site. They were making around $100 per month, which wasn't even enough to cover the server costs, plus they're very annoying. I'm not a fan of Google ads. Maybe there is a better way to fund the forum?

Please let me know if you encounter any bugs, issues, problems, etc with the forum software! If you can't get through here, you can always email me at jpjans at gmail dot com.

Would it be possible to BOLD the blue headings of each thread again? I'm not crazy over the light blue headings.

Also, can you separate the page numbers with commas again? Or something??
Thanks for all your hard work!
I like the new layout. It looks clean.

Thanks for removing the ads. I don't see them on my computer because they are blocked, but I see them when I'm on my cell.

Jacob, when I first started using this site, you used to put out a magazine. What happened to it? I used to love to read the articles and interviews.

How do I turn off getting notifications from the notifications bell at the top?
@guysmom -- We may be able to set that up! Are you referring to just disabling the bell altogether? Or something else?
@ArkLaMissshopping -- Unfortunately, life got in the way, and I had to give up publishing the magazine. It would be great to get it going again, but I'm not sure that I have the time to do it.
@pumpkinspicy -- I'm hesitant to accept donations, as I'm not sure how much I could live up to, in terms of managing the forum appropriately. Not accepting donations makes me feel better about being absentee at times, which I very much am! Though, I do very much care about this community!
Hi Jacob.

Thank you for your work in maintaining and updating the forum!

I noticed that there is a minor issue with latest posts in the updated forum:

When I click on Latest, I am able to see all messages with "no grouping" or "group by date." However, if I select "group by forum" or "group by folder" no topics/messages appear.

The result is the same with any value in the first three dropdowns.

You are providing a valuable service to the mystery shopping community and you deserve to, at the very least, have the financial cost covered. In reality, there is also the time you put in to maintaining and updating which also deserves some compensation.

By adding a voluntary donation button or link, we can all choose to contribute to this forum if we wish, but are not obligated. You have supported the community for years. Let us give something back.
@TeriW -- I got rid of the group by function for now. Thank you for letting me know about the bug.

I'll think about the donation button -- but will definitely hold off for now!
I owned two magazines that were on the stands at places like Books-A-Million, Barnes & Noble, etc. I also had an e-book. I sold out once I reached my goals with the magazines. I could help out with the magazine (online or print), if you ever decide to start it back. I could do interviews and other stuff.

I am sure that there are other people on this forum that has talents they could bring as well.

Just a thought.

I'd like to be able to have an option to disable the bell altogether. Thanks!
@ArkLaMissshopping -- Sounds like you've had a very interesting career! Would be curious to learn more. I don't feel up for starting up the magazine again, as I'd want to run it like a business, and that would mean doing it *right*, in terms of making it actually be sustainable, profitable, pay contributors (even if modestly), etc. Not sure I could get it there without time that I don't have.
I do like keeping this forum going just for it's own sake though. I grew up on internet forums in my teens & early twenties, and wish there were more places like this on the internet, as opposed to the "new" social media like FB, TikTok, etc.
The bell. I don't know what it's about. It says there are posts in a topic that I'm following, however, I'm in no way a follower of anything. Confirmed by my control center - no topics following.
Jacob,

I completely understand.

We have some publishing history in common ArkLaMiss. PM if you'd like to chat about it.
I've noticed a few glitches with the notifications page. It says "New reply in thread you're following" with the HTML code for an apostrophe showing up where it should just be "you're". On the same page, a number of links in the main nav bar are not working properly. Click on "Latest" and you get a 404 error. Click on some of the other links (like Member Introductions) and the link is malformed, with comlist in the link instead of com/list.

Use the exclamation mark and report it.

Please make the page number font size larger (clickable numbers next to the thread/topic title)
@boridi -- I've fixed this! Let me know what you think. smiling smiley
Please find a way for us to "opt out" of getting notifications from that bell! It really doesn't help me at all, and I find it aggravating. So if there is a way to "opt in" and "opt out", I would find that helpful. Thanks!
Agreed. The notifications settings page results in an error message when I try to opt out: "Failed to update preferences. Please try again."
Hi Jacob,

I've sent you a PM regarding a privacy issue related to this forum.
