Getting paid $10 to purchase/return a $300 television?

Just saw an assignment in which you are supposed to purchase a $300 television to see if you are offered the warranty. You can return the television, but really, who is going to do this assignment for only $10? That's insulting.

I just saw one that was the same type of scenario, but you purchase a $299.00 Xbox system. They want to see if they offer the warranty and then you can return the Xbox.
That's not worth it to me. I seldom to $10 shops unless they're on the way to another shop.
I wouldn't do it. No way. I don't do shops under $14 unless they're on the way to where I'm going.
Is this a Bare shop at a major big box retailer? If so, I've done this one several times. The shop and the report are both cakewalks, and its easy to work into my usual weekly grocery/shopping trip. I'll just leave the blender/DVD player/game console/whatever it is this time in my trunk until next week, then return it.

I probably wouldn't do it if I wasn't going to that store anyway.
Not only is a $300 TV drastically different (in terms of size and cost), but $10 for a purchase and return is ridiculous. IMO, shoppers should not enable MSCs that offer these low-paying shops.

Cost on a P/R has never bothered me. It's just circulation through a credit card. And the size of any TV that could be had for $300 doesn't bother me either.

Normally, I'd agree on $10 being a lowball offer. But, like I said, I've done them at a location where I'm most assuredly going anyway, and including time for the purchase, return and report, all it costs me is about a half hour.
I've seen these shops for The Naked Company go up to $40.00. That's the price point it takes to get me interested in tying up $300 on my CC.

My DH was recently rear-ended while waiting for a red light. Totally demolished his bumper/rear end. I'd hate to think of the entanglements involved if there had been a $300 television sitting back there (the driver, like 20% of our state's population, was uninsured.)
I did this shop for a blender once, but I think it was something crazy like $30.00 pay. I just got an offer to do the shop again for $10.00 to buy a $100.00 DVD player. I don't even have a credit card to use and I'm certainly not going to tie up money in my checking account.
I don't use credit cards, either; and would not want *that* much tied up on my debit account! No way. Especially not for so little pay. I *did* do one of those expensive sunglasses purchase/return shops once, when I was much newer to this. It was bonused and near some other shops I was doing. I was using a credit card then, and it wasn't difficult... but I wouldn't want that much tied up on my actual cash account.

gone are the "good days" of profitable shopping.....no way to a TV for me either...too much hassle.
The only one of these I did was for a DVD player. When I went back to return it, I got the 3rd degree and the evil eye. They opened the box to make sure I didn't swap it out or something then reluctantly refunded my $$. I was worried they were going to deny it somehow.

Plus, $10 is an insult. Nope, never again.

This. We are assuming the risk of the purchase from the time that we buy it to the time that it is returned. $10 barely seems enough to assume a $300 risk before adding in the cost of our time to actually do the assignment.
Even if it was a smaller item, like a blender, I won't do any P/R shops for $10, and certainly wouldn't deal with a $300 television! Knowing my luck, I'd probably drop the box in the parking lot trying to load it into my car.
I believe there are many people (not me though!) who would jump at this shop.

People are grabbing $3/$4 shops the minute they hit the board. It's frustrating, but I keep telling myself, it's not like I will do them for such a low fee, so if people want to grab them, let them go for it.
I would not accept a P/R for $10, but such an offer in no manner offends me; folks, this is BUSINESS. It definitely is not the responsibility of an MSC to pay a shopper the amount they deem as profitable; it's the contractor who must decide their worth and reject unacceptable fees.
I feel the same way about the luxury purse shops that pop up in my area requiring a purchase. The shop pays about $12, and you are "allowed" to return the item, but just not worth the hassle.
Here in CA, gas is $4+/gal. A round trip would eat up the fee. Also constant returns on your CC could affect your credit rating.

They bonus those? Dang it! I knew I should have asked for a bonus! They always have a hard time filling the one in my town. I just took one of the purchase optional ones. I actually wanted to go there to check prices on something to wear at work to get rid of the glare on my computer screen. Having a corner office with a window is great, right up until the sun moves to just the right angle that you can't see anything.
It was once, last year, just before Christmas in Woodburn! Not much of a bonus, mind you; but since I had arranged three other shops in Woodburn I added it on. The sunglasses were truly awesome, and if I was a rich person I would have kept them!

On the original visit, the young sales woman and I had gotten on the dog subject (she was a fellow dog lover). When I returned them, and she asked if there was any particular reason, I told her that one of my dogs had been injured since I'd bought the sunglasses, and I needed the money for his vet care. So happens, it was actually true! (He was fine, btw.) But she was so nice about it with that reason.

With my luck, I'd drop the TV and crack it while trying to unload it and bring it back into the store. And I would never do a P/R for $10. I won't do them for $15, either.

LOL We think alike. I'm not about to risk that much for $10.

ROFL! Thanks for a brand new visual for me. I always thought of it more as the Basics/Lacking Extras Company. Now I'll never think of them the same way again. smiling smiley
I remember a big box home improvement store shop a few years ago where it required the P/R of a SINK! That one also paid $10, as I recall. Not sure, because I wouldn't touch a shop like that with a 10-foot pole.
Saw this post for the 300 TV job, read it through, then saw the pay, $10. Delete email!
There is one in my area apparently from a different MSC for expensive Marine Equipment, paying $14. They say, it's an easy return, possible same day, but like the poster above, I'm using my Paypal debit card for all shopping-related payments. And sometimes, it takes a while to get the reimbursements posted. So, nope, I don't do those anymore.

On another note, in the town where I do most my shopping, there's a "no plastic bag" law in effect since 1 July. Paperbags get sold at $0.05. I had a P/R at the "messy" clothing store, paid for the paper bag (!). When I returned the item an hour later, they kept the bag. I didn't notice til a week later, when the reimbursement was posted that it was 5 cents short and couldn't figure out why... grinning smiley so, now we'll have to take grocery bags to the clothing stores?... no more "messy" clothing store P/R, either grinning smiley
I almost did a couple of the expensive marine equipment shops but at reasonable bonuses. I will never, ever, EVER do those shops at $14 each.
I saw that one this week. You could do TV and xbox at same location. But you had to purchase one in the department and one at the front register. Still not worth it in my opinion. But if it ever gets bonused it's nice to know the report is a cakewalk!
I don't like returning items anyway so I don't even consider purchase/return shops. And especially not for $10! - double trip, double hassle, double no.
