Why do companies need EIN?

I have a SSN. I thought just having that would be okay. I am being asked to apply for an EIN. I don't know what that is. I've only lived in Ameria for a few years and have never worked. I am retired. (except for mystery shopping)

I only know of one who requests an EIN and the answer is they don't need it at all. Someone decided it would help ensure we were truly ICs and not employees. You can work for them, but you won't be allowed to self-assign. Look at what they have to offer in your area and decide if it will be worth it or not. For me it wasn't as I don't care for most of their shops and the fees so it is easier to wait for them to call me and offer a bonus.

I agree. Only two companies have ever asked me for an EIN. One was Maritz - a couple of years ago - and they backed off on the unnecessary request when shoppers expressed opinions. The other is TrendSource. I like Maritz a lot and I was glad when they dropped the request for an EIN. I'm registered with TrendSource but they are very low on my D list. I do not have an EIN, and have performed shops for TrendSource but I don't care much for their shops. Unless bonused, I don't find TrendSource worthwhile.
There's really no reason no to do it. I have one for another business I got in 2007 or 2008. I don't remember but if I'm not mistaken it took all of about 3 minutes to do online. I've never actually used it before except for business credit apps. I still file my taxes for that business under my SSN.

Thank you all for your comments.

I got the number anyway and went through a background check and all is good now.

I have a headache now too with all this online work. Phew!
I don't understand why companies have to ask for SSN/EIN when the shopper states they are from Canada not US. A lot of them even say if you do not have US SSN/EIN, leave blank or say No. Some companies don't even check or update that so you can't apply for shops until they approve your "reason".

You would think the system would be upgraded to reflect different profile questions for those from different countries. Hmm

I think companies ask for that for identification purposes. I mean, we are a keyboard to them.

I registered with one company the other day and had to give my driver's license and EIN (which I didn't have at the time)..proof of who I am, along with a background check.

We'll see...
Trend Source is on my A list...I love their upscale grocery store and do about 3 per month in different locations, although
they have no rotation. I love the quality of food and with my putting in $ can have some great food. TS pays twice a
month (5th&20th), and the EIN# is not a big deal, plus you can self-assign by having one...for me it's a win win. Funny
the difference of opinion about this MSC.....different strokes, you need to make your own decisions, and not be swayed.
I had been talked out of getting the EIN#, in heated threads, and am happy I didn't listen. I make about 60.00+ in groceries monthly, and usually wait 5 days for payment.

Live consciously....
I've been asked also by one mystery shopping company and for month's ignored it so I was dropped from the preferred status. I just applied one a few weeks back and got one the same day I applied.

That is true.. I would rather give out my passport or DL number than my SIN. What I don't get is companies stating that Non-US citizens don't have to enter SSN/EIN then not updating it so you can't accept shops..
