Your Mystery Shopping Experience

Mr.Jans
I thank you for your inquiry about my experience with shopping. I must tell you that the opportunities that have been made available to me either pay far to little to make a go of given the rising cost of gas or costly to the shopper with little or no reimbursment.
If the feedback is soo vital to these agencies, I believe that they should make it worth the time and energies( not $8.00 a visit) for the shopper. I do not believe that people are making what ridiculous amounts are posted.
Take Care-

I have been shopping since mid March 2007 and hace done 50 shops.

I am presently signed up with 101 companies, but I am always looking more more to widen my exposure. I choose the companies based on the MSPA list, your list and comments in mystery shopping forums. Of those companies, I have worked with 23.

I have not had a job refused or had to do one over. I get high marks which I am hoping will lead to higher paying jobs.

I was on a Yahoo group for "High paying" jobs but all I got was ads to buy products. Dropped that group fast!
I have been mystery shopping for a few years now and I do about 150 shops a month, I work for 6 companies and they all are very good to work for and they pay on time. I will shop any shop that is in my travel area, I am a salesman and travel a 200 mile area so its very easy for me to do as many as I do and still have time to do my job selling. This is a very good way to pick up extra money full or part time. You just need to do your homework on the mystery shopping companies. Thank you for letting me shop for you.
Claude
I only just started MS. I have registered with a little over 100 companies so far, with a little over 100 to go! I currently have about ten companies that email me on a daily basis with shops I can accept, if I wish.

Within my first two weeks, I did five shops - two fast food, one gas station, one discount store, and one fitness center. Each shop took only maybe half an hour. For all five shops, I was paid $73.00 (from three different companies). I figure that averages to about $14.00 for half an hour's work.

I was paid by each company, just as they promised, and per each of their schedules.

Unfortunately for me, my "reliable transportation" turned out to be not so reliable. I have been without a vehicle for a few weeks, and unable to sign up for any shops. I am keeping my fingers crossed that my lack of accepting shops is reflecting negatively on me with any companies.......

Anyhoo, I will be doing a lot more shopping as soon as I get my new "reliable transportation"!!
1. How long have you been mystery shopping?
My first job was March 29, 2007

2. How many mystery shopping jobs have you done?
More than 50 already

3. How many companies have you applied to?
Probably about 20-25 companies

4. Is there anything you’d like to know that would help you with your mystery shopping?
I am looking for companies that pay a little bit better, with gas at $3 per gallon, I am not taking jobs that pay only $5-7. I live about 8 to 12 miles from most shops. I would like to see these companies paying a little more since gasoline is so expensive.

5. Any positive experiences you’d like to share?
I took on an assignment one day that was near where I was going to be in town already. It was for a children's clothing store. I just loved the store, the clothes, the deals and the experience was wonderful. I plan on making this a regular store to buy clothing for my grandchildren. Didn't even know it was there until I took the assignment. Also, from the little bit of time I have been doing these mystery shops, I have almost paid off a $550 credit card!!!! I will have it paid off very soon. I'm thrilled about that.

6. Any negative experiences you’d like to warn other mystery shoppers about?
You must weight out the overall experience, what the job is paying, what all is expecting for that amount, how far are you going to have to drive. Is it really worth while to do this assignment. You must realize that most companies do not pay immediately, some are thirty to forty-five days before you will be paid.
Upstbk,

The companies have no way of knowing why you are not accepting shops. Other shoppers could have grabbed the shops before you could, you are currently busy with other assignments, your computer isn't working, your personal life interfered, or. . . your reliable transportation isn't reliable.

What they do know is that you aren't shopping with them. For the ones who first use their best shoppers and those who help them out with a short deadline, they will just not be calling on you until you are in their radar again. You probably still get the emails notices of jobs posted.

I wouldn't worry about not being there too much. You can't control it. You will be back soon. While you are not going out shopping, look for those shops that you can do with the phone. You might catch those faster than the other shoppers who are out scurrying around.
I have been mystery shopping, demonstrating and merchandising since May of 2006. I work full time for a car dealership so the only time I have for shops are my lunch hour, some evenings, and weekends. I think that mystery shopping is a great part time job that is fun and brings in extra money. I have applied to over 100 companies, I work on a fairly steady basis and I am establishing good relationships with my schedulers. They email or call me when they get in a bind and need a shop done. They are also very good about giving me extra money for gas. I have performed a very wide variety of shops and I plan to continue with mystery shopping for a long time. The demonstrations and merchandising usually pay well and you can meet some very nice people. I have only had 1 bad experience with a company that did not pay me after a job and I am being much more careful about my documentation and keeping track of every email and each individual I speak with about my assignments. I wish I had more time for assignments but I take every one that I can. Happy Mystery Shopping, Everybody.
I have not been recieving any jobs where I live they want me to be certified because of the gaming and because i have not worked any steady job in the last 3yrs, i have no money to be certified so iam trying to get some one from my family to help me it does cost so maybe in a few weeks I will be cetified I have had a job since i have been 14 yrs old now 43 and there are so many different rules now to being hired so hopefully in a few weeks there will be some kind of work but thanks for asking.

Hi Jacob

In the three months I have been mystery shopping, I have completed 37 shops. I have applied to 18 companies, all of whom are MSPA members. I have decided to make that a requirement. I have found vast amounts of helpful hints on mystery shopping from, MSPA, Volition, and your website, Jacob, as well as from the companies for whom I shop.

My latest positive experience was finally snagging a supermarket shop last night, with free groceries in addition to the shopping fee. Usually those are gone by the time I see them. Other fuzzy moments include reveal shops at eight Subways. It is so much fun to give those rewards.

FREE ADVICE TIME: 1. Concise, coherent reports are an essential part of mystery shopping. Perfect spelling and good grammar are essential. If you would like to succeed at this, please seek out a writing skills class. Maybe your local Adult Education program provides one. 2. If you don't get paid for a shop, email the scheduler for that shop, then go on to company management if that doesn't help.
Mr.Jans,
Thanks for the opportunities and the imformation> I pay attention to it all. Unfortunatly, I've only done one shop. I have had a tough time with out of pocket money and fearing I would not get paid. Also, with gas prices so outragiuos I'm not drivng much these days.
Thanks,
Ramona
Jacob,

I haven't started yet, but am just getting ready to. I am really excited about it. I have done this in the past, so have some experience. I esp. like the idea of flexible hours.
I can not say i have had much yet,i did i with sonic drive in but as they pay very poorly i do not believe i shall accfept another from themThen i did one using the internet to order something.will only get pd. for the article i ordered. I have signed up with several different comopanies and so far there have not been too many interesting offers.lately every time i get an interesting from Shadow Shoppers on my e-mail i get a message up on thge screen saying there isan error somewhere. very annoying. If I ever get started properly I hope I can make some decent money. So far I am not impressed
I've been shopping for a few months now and am curious about 2 things:-

1. Do you shops with a MS company until your pay gets close to $600 and then stop shopping with that company for tax reasons?

2. Is work with some companies seasonal? I've been working with several companies, but the 3 that I've done most work with all seem to have dried up the past week or so. I check almost daily so see that jobs just aren't being posted. These are companies that have called me for assignments when they've been stuck so I know I have a good standing with them.

Love all the comments from people -
I signed up almost a year ago and have never got an assignment. I am not willing to dish out money for something that I will never be able to make money at .Living in Richmond BC Canada I have gotten e-mails telling that there are postings in my area but there is never is full detail description because I am a bronze member not a silver or gold member. If I bite the bullet and sign up will I make my money back?
I read alot of the postings and have noticed that many shoppers are under the assumption that you can make up to $599 with a company and not have to claim it. This is far from the truth. Unfortunately, legally you need to claim all that you make. Once you make $599 or $600, then the company will send you the statement for your taxes. If you don't make this amount, you still need to file whatever you make as income.
Thanks for your input, Sandy. I was thinking about writing the same thing. I would like to think that all mystery shoppers are honest with their tax obligations.
I have put in to some not many. Im still working on getting in a whole lot at one time. I did receive one which was for $10. I have to find out what I can start with so it will not be a waste of time. The reason for that is for I have to take out my own taxes. I'm trying to get everything straight with that. I do thank you so much for your help. If by any chance you know of any free working at home I will be very interested. Talk to you soon.
I have been mystery shopping since January 2007. I have done about 60-70 shops so far. I try to average at least 3 per week. I'm registered with about 10 companies, but do most of my work for 3. I have never had to pay a company to work for them. I receive about 20 emails per day from companies with opportunities, and two companies will even call me if they have shops in my area that I may be interested in if I don't check the jobs on the website. There has only been one company that I have ended my contract with because I found them too difficult to work with for jobs that only paid $5. I've been doing a lot of jobs for fast food, bar shops, movie theaters, grocery stores, medical facilities and financial services. The most important thing I've found about getting jobs is to treat this like a job. I have to I need continually monitor my emails and job listings on websites for the companies that have a lot of work in my area to stay active. It's also important to only schedule jobs I know I can take, stay in contact with the schedulers if there is a problem, read job instructions carefully, and file reports on time. I won't get rich doing mystery shopping, but every weekend I get to see movies for free and I'm making enough to buy a tank of gas per week. And the tax write-offs are going to help a lot.
I have been shopping since 2004. I also do audits and merchandising. I only work with one company so far. It keeps me some what busy.
I did my first shop on June 1st, so 3 weeks experience only, whew.

I started with trailer checks, and those are very easy to do and well worth the money if it isn't too far a drive for you. I have also done a Target shop where I just went to the toy department and played with Etch A Sketches to find any defective ones. That was a simple job too, and you get to announce yourself to management, so you don't have to worry about remaining incognito.

The only true "mystery" shops I have done were definitely a learning experience. I signed up for 4 gas station shops that required both a gas purchase and another small purchase, and it required a digital picture of the bathroom and then the pump before I left. Of course all of these shops also require a receipt. Well, my first one I was so nervous about remembering everything I needed to check that I forgot to ask for a receipt, so I drove 12 miles out of my way to go back to get a receipt and forgot to get the name of the cashier from their name tag. I made up a story about getting lost and asked for directions to a street that I already knew the location of. I then mentioned I forgot the receipt and I needed it for my expense account. I got the cashier's name as well and luckily no one had used the same pump I had used, so they were able to call up the last transaction for that pump and get me a receipt with the actual times I was there. I then went and did the other 3 stations and still was nervous, but remembered to get everything. The day did not end well though. In order to get paid, I had to have the pictures and when I got home, I did as advised and saved all my pictures under the job number of each site. What I didn't realize is that I was saving the pictures back into the camera, not on the computer. Thinking I had saved them to the computer, I then deleted them from the camera. I was heartbroken and without the pictures I wouldn't get paid. I let the scheduler know and unfortunately the shops had to be re-assigned to another shopper. I will never make that mistake again, it was all my own fault though, I couldn't blame the company for not paying me.

The one bright thing was that in the middle of the 4 gas station shops I did a donut shop and that one at least went well. My advice for new shoppers is to take it slow at first and get the feel for how things are done, even if it means taking some of the low paying shops at first. The more you do, the easier it will be to remember the requirements of what each shop are looking for. Don't worry, you will make mistakes, but just take them as a lesson and dust yourself off and go again.

I have signed up so far with about 15 companies, many of them don't have shops in my area though. I wish it was easier to find just the companies that have shops in my area, but you can't find out where most of the shops are until after you have signed up. I have already started getting phone calls for specific shops though, so I think that things can only get better from here. I think I read a post from someone, maybe even Jacob, to sign up for about 5 a day, that way you will eventually be signed up for all possible companies and will have many many shops to choose from.

Well as usual I have been long winded, I do have one more piece of advice about applying for shops. I will post that tomorrow. Right now I am going to climb into my hot tub and relax a bit before going to bed.
Good morning. Since I am new to Mystery Shopping, like many others I am applying to multiple shops right now. I have found that many of them are asking for the same information, including an example of your writing style. To save time I have written up everything asked for and saved it in my word processing program. Then when I run across an application that asks for the info, I just copy and paste. This works for not only for a description of one of your shops, but also as to why you would be a good mystery shopper, your availability or the towns you can shop in if multiples like mine. Not only does it save you from having to re-type it all every time, once you have written it once, you can spell check it and never have to worry about posting a sample with typos in it. They do pay attention to that stuff, if you are sloppy with your report writing, they think you are being sloppy with your shops. Try and keep your sample a bit concise though as some of them have a maximum length and I found that my original sample was too long for some of them.
I Have several assignment mostly small shop but that fine, I like the role playing , the only draw back with some of the company will send me an e-mail for a shop for the next day that need to be done, I still have a full-time job,i had a few assignment that I turn down it was not worth the gas, since gas is so high, other than that it's fun, it about 5 month since I join mystery shopping
Jacob,I've been a MS for about two months now. I accepted two assignments- one for Pepperidge Farms (ongoing) til August and one for a private mini-storage survey which I recently completed. What I have noticed is that the assignment time versus the actual time aren't even close unless you want it done in a H/A fashion. So the schedulers should be a little more attentive to it.
I have also decided to concentrate on only three or less "companies" to which I will apply for the "job".otherwise this could become a full time job rather than a part time. Thanks for your interest- your occasional e-mail keep up a newbies spirit. Donald Tucker- Conrpe, Texas
I haven't signed up for anything yet. I have a hard time understanding the procedure to get started!! I donot want to go into any food establishments and that semms to be all there is offered in my area.
I have just started Mystery Shopping. I attended a class given by Cathy Stucker which really got me started. I have done 5 Mystery shops last week. Two were retail stores, one fabric store. one salad bar and one fast food shop. I have registered with 5 companies and plan to do more soon. I am working on a system to keep track of all my shops. I purchased the spreadsheet "Bible" and am starting to get familar with it. Everything is very new to me, but there is a lot of support. I hope to do 2 to 3 shops aweek in the furture.
I have been unable to secret shop since I signed up. My health has been very poor
lacking the energy to seek out shops and follow through. You have given excellent information and I onlyneed to follow t
I have been over-whelmed with the amount of shops I've been getting. I started in April and I have done well over 100 shops. Paying from $5.00 to $250.00. A large variety, from casual dining, fast food, financial banks, apartment, so many to list. I am registered with about 15 companies. I have found them to all be legit - and they pay promptly. I get direct deposits, pay-pal payments as well as direct checks in the mail. It is alot of fun - since I enjoy shopping anyway. I work full time so I plan my shops around my work schedule, and average around 10 shops a week. The extra money is great. I signed up in the beginning with shadow shopper, for my leads - I upgraded for 90 days and in August when it expires, I should be set for direct contacts for all of my continued shops. The information you provide has had wonderful pointers. I have taken advantage of the links you have offered to even increase my opportunties.
I cannot not think of any additional information at this time.
Just a big thank you - for enabling me to have fun and make money.
I have been a shopper for over a year but have not done as much as I would like. No jobs were offered (or were already filled) for many months after I started. Then I only had a few that did not pay enough to cover my gas/time. Finally I got some worthwhile jobs.

I have done resets, restaurant and bank jobs. I like bank-type jobs because I can do them on MY time schedule.

I can't think of anything to ask that would help me except how to get more of the above mentioned jobs.

I have probably applied to ten companies and regularly hear from about three.

My experiences have all been positive.
I have looked into many m shopping sites. Most are for very minor type work. I have done hotels and banks and am bored with these type things. I used to own my own travel agency and would love to do cruises but dont know how to go about it.. I have cruised over 50 ships and most lines and know good from bad service, I have been a M shopper for 11 years. I want to expand now that I have more free time. I do not want to pay for training which (I have much experiance) If you can help please reply. I also worked for the air lines 18 yrs. NH
