Buying Christmas Presents

I just bought my first Christmas present of the season today...and I did it through mystery shopping. Basically got the gift for free, plus got a few extra dollars to keep! I love getting an early jump on things. ( This shop was at Pier One) Anyone else have places they like to go for gifts? SOOOO thankful for this!

I frequent a website called hip2save and they post fantastic deals on things all year around. I was done with Christmas shopping by June.
I've been done for months now, the cookie dough is also made and waiting in the freezer to be baked. I worked retail on a black Friday and since then I won't leave the house that day. It was fraught with Cettie-Adventure.

This is a great idea! I've been trying to stay away from any purchase shops lately, but this might be a good time to start stockpiling.

It works out best if you do it year-round.

I'm finished shopping for my kids! Well...I have 1 more thing to try and get them. The Frozen Dolls from Disney. I've had shops there, but they never have them. sad smiley
I had so many PANDORA shops (thankfully), that I was able to start my SIL a nice bracelet for Christmas. Still have some people to shop for, but I'm hoping I have some other retail shops. smiling smiley My kids' dad says I'm hoarding. Ha. Whatever.
I have been trying to stay away from the purchase shops too...because I would rather put in the work to make money. But if I can get a shop that I know I can get a gift from, I will do it. I just thought about doing this a few weeks ago, and I hope I can get at least some of my shopping knocked out!
Erica,

It makes sense to get as many of your gifts/regular expenses through shopping reimbursements as possible, because it's money that doesn't count towards your income. So, it makes a lot of sense to do oil change shops, gift shops, grocery shops, gas station shops, etc... because that's untaxed money. Nothing better than that!

In a fee plus reimbursement shop, only the fee counts towards taxable income.

Example, I regularly do a shoe store shop that only pays $5, but reimburses $30. I buy shoes for my kids, so always up spending right over $30. That's an expense that I'd have put out anyway, so... why not make it free? And I'm only getting taxed on the $5 I made in fees, not the $30 I'm getting back as reimbursement.

I mean, sure, you could do a $35 no purchase shop, make $35, and turn around and spend it on the shoes, or gifts, or whatever... but you're getting taxed on that $35 and you spent $35...whereas in my example, I'm getting that same $35 back, but got free shoes and am only getting taxed on $5.

Right. It is just me and my husband, and we are both going to school. So we will on a tight budget and we don't buy much other than necessities on a regular basis. So we just don't have much of a need for a lot of the stuff I see. So it is better for me to just take the ones that have a fee instead of buying stuff that is just reimbursed. I probably need to apply for some more companies so that I can find shops with things we would actually use smiling smiley Because that is a good point about being taxed on reimbursements!
Here are a few types of shops which can reduce your taxable income and your regular expenses.

Grocery- If you coupon, use these for non-couponed shopping, like meat, deli, produce

Gas stations- All that shopping driving means you go through more!

Shoe stores- Shop clearance and buy for next year.

Clothing stores (Even if you don't buy clothes regularly, they're good for stocking up on basics that are regularly replaced, like socks, underwear, tanks)

Oil changes- All that shopping driving means these happen more frequently

Cell phone accessory shops- Spare phone batteries, car chargers, etc... all good things to have extras.

Restaurant shops- Every lunch/dinner out means less grocery expenses buying ingredients to make a meal

Hair salons- These could lower expenses for your husband, if he gets them done regularly.

Bookstore shops: Either for yourself or as a gift

Massage shops- Treat yourself. winking smiley Shopping just isn't fun unless you reward yourself every once in awhile, and hey... you're getting reimbursed! Guilt-free reward.

These all sound great! I don't see a lot of these shops (cell phone accessory, bookstore, shoe store) in my area...so now I am more motivated to apply for some more companies smiling smiley
I agree it is nice getting those things tax free. I do the oil changes for reason and some grocery shops. I also am on two book reveiwer programs, they send me the books and I give an honest reveiw and keep the book. I have been picking books that I can use for gifts such as Bearnstein Bears for my young niece.
A few years ago, my mom did a lot of shops at a big box store (think yellow). She was able to build up gift cards with her required purchases.....so my siblings and I benefitted from that.

There is one company that does the massage shops for a big chain....every time i see one I hesitate and next thing I know its gone....one of these months!!!!!

Bookstore shops? I know of two chains...I know the one is now being shopped, the other one I saw shops on awhile back....used to love it when Borders was around.....

Silver certified (since 2009) and willing to do shops all around the greater Chicago, NW Indiana, and Southern Wisconsin areas (including airports!.

Book reviews?! That sounds awesome. If you don't mind me asking...is that with a mystery shopping company? Or is it an entirely different thing? And is this something they pay you for? Or do you just do a review for the free books?

The book reveiws are through Thomas Nelson publishers. They don't pay, you just get to keep the books. I am hoping to get enough recognition to someday have some sales for my book. A second publisher contacted me through them to do their books. My mom is loving her free Amish romance books and when my granddaughter was born I reveiwed 101 Bible stories for kids so she got that.
