In addition to shopping, what do you do for income?

SandyF - Have you ever done work as an "Extra" ? I have, and must say it was fun and boring all at the same time. Sometimes you are required to work through the night (show up at 9pm - get done at 9 am) and most days are 10-12 hours.

The big kick is to "see" yourself in a movie, as you have n0 credits of course. Most of the time it is a split second on screen and can only be really appreciated in frame by frame viewing, but fun nonetheless.

I worked as an extra in 6 movies before the casting company went out of business. Hope to maybe do it again one day.

Hi Boutique
both of my kids are members of SAG and I went with them on many an extra job when they were under age and had to have a parent along. I always enjoyed it. Of course for kids there were no overnight jobs and they weren't allowed to work over 12 hours and they got paid sag wages even before they joined the union. I think the latest we were out was around midnight. For me though I have never done it but if you bring something to do and some warm clothing...i remember hanging around late into evening on some of those warehouse type settings where it was all concrete and could get really chilly...or outdoors holding areas in cold weather were even worse. The food was usually great!
I'm a free-lance writer and blogger. I used to earn a ton of money blogging on Bubblews, but when their bubble burst, I made next to nothing. Hence, mystery shopping.
Some interesting ideas here. Retired from a career in human resources, I raise fruit and veggies on my minifarm, am a superintendent at the state fair for a total of 8 weeks, write HR scripts for a video company, and I'm very frugal. I buy/sell on Craig's List, Etsy, and eBay. I use cultural passes at the library for free admission to museums, zoos, and performances. I house-sit in Arizona during the winter for a free apartment and use frequent flyer miles to get there. I had a quiet roommate for 3 years who was a handiman and fixed everything plus paid $500 a month. I volunteer at a thrift store and get first pick. I barter and trade. Did I mention frugal? What a fun challenge!
I manage a Campground / RV Park. It's fun and I get to meet a lot of different people who are traveling through the area.
Winner!

I bake and I make candy. I started making brittle a couple years when I purchased my home with a pecan tree in the front yard. I refused to sell the pecans for 56 cents a pound to local shops, and found candy making a WIN-WIN opportunity all the way around.
If you live near major convention cities, hospitality staffing work is one way to make side money. I live about 80 miles from Orlando/Disney and about 6 months out of the year are fairly busy. I also travel a bit for the better paying work. In general the work doesn't pay too much ($12-$14/hour usually) but it's easy as long as you don't mind standing, smiling and being around large groups of people.

Shopping since 1995; full-time since 2009. Blogging about shopping on www.myfrugalmiser.com.
What, no other Uber drivers? (Or Lyft, depending upon your area.) Since we are skilled at being "independent contractors", I figured I would add it to my repertoire. Been doing it for a week and haven't been killed yet!!! :-)

I know it's semi-controversial, but I'm going to ride it for as long as it's working. It pays *slightly* better than most shops I do :-/
I have a completely different career. I have been in the insurance industry for many yearsm and also do employee beneifts for employees of companies. I started to do mystery shopping in 1992 for a fast food hamburger company. I do this for the fun of it and to see how well customer service is for the shopping industry. The money I get from mystery shopping is targeted for groceries and fun things I need as a female shopper.
As to part time, write back and let me know what you would want to do on a part time basis.
I take care of my disabled husband (non-paid) and sell Miche interchangeable handbags and fashion accessories as well as PartyLite home fragrances & decorator accessories. Occasionally, I will do on-line research or virtual assistant work.

thanks for the joke, needed that today after walkin all over downtown Chicago for multiple shops
Full time IT Manager here. I love the restaurant perks of mystery shopping the most and secondly, the reimbursed retail jobs.
Amazing the variety of careers/hobbies/whatever that are represented here.

Time to build a bigger bridge.

I also do merchandising (heavy) and demos (sporadically).
Other than one small rental property. this is my income. I enjoy it and have lost 50 lbs. since leaving the corporate world 50 months ago.
writermagic--the ones that are hiring! LOL. Most are pretty good. Some of them have nuisance requirements. Some don't pay as much as others. It is rather complicated to tell you anything because of course you want to get hired by the one(s) that have openings in your area. I combine several. There are some I've dropped. One pays significantly better than another but that other pays mileage.
I retired 8 months ago, and this is my only job now. I was a Quality Assurance Specialist for the US Govt (Defense) before I retired.
Regarding the $1.86 baby carrier bought at Goodwill...Great for you, but either an employee at that store is totally incompetent or the item was incorrectly priced. Either way, that store is poorly managed and depriving Goodwill and the less fortunate of needed income. I would notify the manager.

I guess it's capitalism but something I wouldn't be proud of!

Central Oklahoma has goodwill shops but only for about 30 minutes till they are gone.
I tutor Math and English and recently started doing UBER. I sign up for shops and turn on UBER hoping it will get me closer to the shop location. It usually works pretty well.
If you stretch yourself to do video shops you will find much higher paying assignments. It does require an investment, though. But some MSPs will provide equipment for your first couple of shops.

I teach first grade. How did you get the job scoring essays?

It is scoring standardized tests. I get essays because that is the easiest for me. I remember one year the essays were in Biology. I usually got elementary school assignments. I was told about it by a teacher who does that each summer. To me, scoring standardized tests were counter-intuitive and harder than grading papers. If I remember correctly, the people who scored math or Spanish got paid more.
I have a full time accounting job at a college, teach managerial accounting and economics there as an adjunct (sitting out this semester, though), do the accounting for our small construction business, do grant reviews for several Federal agencies, have two rental properties, do interviews of nursing home residents who are moving out under a state grant, and do any focus groups or mock trials that are available (not many in our area).
