Bad Employees

I've been mystery shopping for less than a month now and have encountered some AWESOME employees who hit every mark they were supposed to. Then there are the "others".... My very first shop I did a car dealership who suggested putting in an after market dvd player vs. having a factory one installed (or purchasing the car that came with that option) in a brand new car since it's cheaper. Today was the worst one I've had yet though. I walked through the door and she mumbled something but I didn't know if she was talking to me or not because she didn't even look up from her phone. When I inquired about the internet package (the reason for my shop), she suggested I get a code from a friend so I don't have to purchase it myself! Yikes!!! Any other seasoned shoppers have some employee horror stories?

Interesting. I suspect that putting in an aftermarket DVD player is more profitable for the dealer if done by the dealer, but frowned upon by the car manufacturer and if that was the case, the dealership and the salesperson probably heard about it. And if the salesperson advised you to go elsewhere to have it installed, then the dealership was likely very upset. Maybe better from your perspective as a consumer, but not better from all perspectives.

The salesperson who advised getting a code from a friend is condoning theft. And that is just the start of the issues involved.

For me it was a cell phone shop quite some time ago. But, it stands out as what I think of as the worst “head shaker” shop I have done. The store was small and run-down, but still had the big brand signs and merchandise.

The lighting was poor and the carpet was dirty. I was the only customer in the store, yet the clerk did not say a word to me until I spoke up. It was torture to wait the required time before asking for assistance.

On top of that, the clerk was sitting behind the counter watching Jerry Springer and eating Cheetos out of a big bag.

Here I am, browsing the merchandise and taking note of the untidy store and peeping through the glass case. I was unable to read most of the labels because the sky was heavily overcast, but most of what light there was came through the windows.

So I leaned over the counter and asked, “Are you open for business?”

The guy slowly turns his head and replies, “Yeah, is there something I can get for you?”

As per instructions, I said, “I’m not a Cingular customer. But I was thinking of changing my cell service. Would you show me some of your phones and plans?”

He points to the glass case and says, “Go ahead and look at those. You can tell me which one you want and then I can show you some brochures.”

Then he turned his head back to watch the television and ignored me some more.

I shopped the big blue electronic store about getting a television. The associate was friendly and "helpful." He asked me not to tell his boss, as he will get fired, but he can get me someone to install the plasma TV, on my wall, for much cheaper.

WOW, that's horrible. I hate when stuff like that happens during a shop. I hate to be the bad guy and report it, but that's what mystery shopping is for! Sometimes I'm so shocked at the things people do and say to complete strangers...
I'm fairly new at this too, but I've already had my benchmark worst experience. Most of the employees have been good to great though. It always feels good to give them the credit they deserve.
