I put some information on online surveys on the Introductions thread, until the suggestion was made that we should put it on a thread for survey info only.
So --- Here I am, on the proper thread, I hope, to contribute anything I can think of to help those interested in online surveys.
I don't even know what to say first - there's so much I've learned the hard way.
Let me start here: As I said on Introductions you need to get a free email address to use only for your online surveys. I recommend Inbox.com because of it's terrific web security guard and it also has a form filler which helps alot when you're you're applying over and over. Some people use Robo Form, but the sad news is that neither form filler works on every site.
OK. Now, you are applying to be accepted by a survey company. PRINT OUT the 1st page, BEFORE you continue to the next page. PRINT OUT that page BEFORE you move to the next page, etc., or submit your application. After you have PRINTED and submitted it, if they have asked you for a user ID and/or password, make sure you have that written on your print out. Be sure to write the date you applied on it. If there is an email address, a phone number or a street address, be sure to get those written down. I copy them and paste them into a Word document labeled - you guessed it! - Survey Companies Contact Information.
OK, now you have applied, printed out EVERY SINGLE PAGE BEFORE you went on to the next page or submitted the application. (You can't go backwards on most of these applications, because your info is lost and you have to start all over again, or sometimes the site will lock you out, so print BEFORE moving forward!) Once you've submitted your application, you'll get a welcome email, usually within an hour or two. PRINT that out also. Staple them all together. You'll be glad you did!
You'll begin getting emails from the company/companies you applied to and were welcomed to. Here's where trouble can begin brewing if you're not extremely careful. Read the email carefully and if it's to your liking click on it to see the offer. Scrutinize this offer with at least 4 eyes. If you can find a place to click on Terms and Conditions or How It Works, do so and read, read, read. Most importantly you've got to have at least a smidgeon of an idea of what they're saying. Don't go to the next page yet! Go back and PRINT out the email first, because you'll need to know which company the offer is from.
Then PRINT out the offer. If there are places you have to fill out on the offer before you can go to the next page, that's ok, but PRINT out that page before you continue.
Now, you'll have to do the math. Company A is offering you $10.00
to do a survey on a book club. It says you'll get 4 FREE books! Next page says 4 FREE books if you just pay the shipping cost of $3.99 and join the club. You started with $10.00, now you're going to have to pay $3.99 for shipping. $10 minus $3.99 = $6.01. Not too bad. Now see what joining the club entails. Oops!
In the next year, you have to buy 4 books @ $8.99 each plus $2.99 shipping each.
That's $11.98 for each book x 4 books = $47.92. You only had $6.01 left over after you paid the shipping for the "FREE" books, so all in all you'll lose
$41.91. OUCH! Rotten deal unless you want to buy some books!
On the other hand, Company B is offering you $15.00 to sign up for a FREE MONTH LONG TRIAL membership in a Video Club. You'll have the videos of your choice delivered to your door and you mail them back when you're finished with them. They want you to pay a $2.99 registration fee and you can cancel anytime you want during the trial period and not be charged another cent. If you do not cancel within that time, they will charge your credit card $19.99 each month and keep sending you videos until you do cancel. This I love! I'm getting $15.00, paying out $2.99, so I net $12.01, ok by me. That's better pay than I get doing some MSing jobs and I didn't leave the house, use any gas and it took me 15 minutes, including printing and reading Terms & Conditions. Here is a WARNING: If you can't find a phone #, an email address or a street address (I'm very leary about a street address if there is not 1 of the others) where you can contact them to cancel, RUN! And YES, I did do it, to my everlasting regret.
Another WARNING: Do not EVER give them your Social Security # or bank account #. They can pay you through PayPal or they can send you a check, not by Direct Deposit. There are some honest and trustworthy survey companies, but there are many more that are not.
The companies you apply to will usually have websites to go to. There you can find lists of surveys that are available. You can pick and choose the ones you want to try. This is the best way to find good surveys without waiting for emails. Remember to do the math! With their Web Security Guard, Inbox.com, (free email site) is invaluable at weeding out illegitimate companies. If you click on a survey site that isn't safe, a sign that says "Dangerous" will show
up. It gives you 3 choices: Don't go there, More info, or Enter website. I always look at More info to determine how "bad" the site is. The info will tell you how many times the site has been reported for spam, pop-up floods, phishing, adware,
spyware, porn and a bunch of other transgressions. Depending on the number of reports made, I decide whether to take the chance of going there or not. You can also send reports of sites you feel should be ratted out for misbehavior.
One thing you should avoid at all costs, is any site that says "Win a $500 gift card for Home Depot, (Wal Mart, KMart, Penneys, Macys, etc)" or win $? gift card for ANY restaurant. Also avoid any site that says "We Guarantee You $1000 (or any amount) for completeing this survey. The survey goes on and on for hours and then all of a sudden it just disappears! You've spent all that time for nothing!
Although some of the companies I'm going to list have been approved by other forum members, here are the ones that I won't go near anymore. Not all of them are "BAD", some are companies I don't (for one reason or another) want to waste time on anymore. Try them yourselves, if you choose to, and see what you think.
MyBigRewards MyRewards ECNResearch Mindfield Greenfield SurveySpot
Net Panel Zoom Panel Paid Surveytopia Global Survey Group NPDOR
Survey Panel Group Your2Cents Survey Monster
Another group that I spend only extra time (yeah, well what is that?) on, but that I like, consists of the following:
Market Survey Creations Rewards.net MyView MyPoints Memomail/Memolink (they seem to be the same) Eversave (a freebie company) e-poll
PollingPoint Reward TV
There are 3 great companies that have lists of survey companies - FREE!
Go to www.getpaidtotry.com/offers.php (you may not be able to use this unless you're registered.) If not, go to getpaidtotry.com and sign up. They have some offers where you can earn money when you sign up with survey companies. Viva Research - $1, Survey Strategy - $3, Fushion Cash - $1 and others. I don't have a current list at this moment. The last thing I need is more survey companies.
PaidSurveys.com and SurveyPro.com are the other 2 companies with free lists.
You can also try SurveyMonster.net and GlobalSurveyGroup.com. Both of these are on my "don't go near" list, probably only because I like the other 3 better and I don't need 5.
This is an awful lot of info to digest and I don't want to scare you off. I'm going to condense this into manageable size and then you can go back and reread the "fine print".
1)Set up a FREE email address to use only for online surveys. I recommend Inbox.com
2)Apply, apply, apply, just as you do for MSing. Start slowly so you can find some sites that will pay you to sign up with other companies. Remember to PRINT out EVERY page BEFORE continuing to the next page.
3)Read emails for surveys. PRINT them out, PRINT filled out Offers BEFORE going to the next page, and read (print?) Terms and Conditions. Staple them together.
4)Pick and choose which offers you want to complete carefully and DO THE MATH!
5)Do the surveys - and where it applies - don't forget to cancel a few days ahead of time.
6)Collect your money, rewards or prizes.
I, personally, like money!
You gave the best survey sites. I use most of them and they are honest. Only problem I ever have is when they use OTX to do a survey. I spend 10 minutes then it either freezes or it says I don't qualify for the survey! The 10 minutes is what they said the total survey would take! Something seems fishy.
I never do those OTX because they always say you do not qualify....do you want to try for another survey?? Waste of time.....
I did 3 Pinecones this week..........also, I received 2 bottles of detergent to test for 3 weeks today.........full size.........64 loads of laundry FREE!! well, I have to do the labor of washing but at least the detergent is free......
Then you signed up with the wrong companies.

I've received over $100 in the last 4 months from doing surveys. Not a LOT of money, but it beats a "sharp stick in the eye".
I stay away from companies that require you to sign up with X number of offers first. These are either scams, or there's no profit in it. I just didn't pursue them. Often signing up with one of their "partners" gives you endless subscriptions that can't be closed easily, or fills your box with spam..

I set up a separate email address, but by staying with legitimate companies, I have not received a single piece of spam. Although they're legit, it also doesn't pay to do companies that give you points toward a gift card. I've done dozens for Global Test Market, and still don't haver my 1000 points to get a $5 gift card for Amazon.

If you're single, over 50, and/or have no children, you're disqualified from quite a few.
BIG list of CASH paying survey companies.

WARNING: MANY of thse companies may not be what you're looking for and it is also not meant to be a COMPLETE list of such companies. Neither do I represent that you will be able to successfully register with all of the below companies. It is intended to ONLY be a list to help in your search for paying online survey companies. Hey, at least you can compare it to the list of companies that you're already registered with!:-)

If you are into the "Prize" awarding sights, I have a list of those too. Just PM me requesting the info.
Thanks for all the information, when I have some more time I'll try it.

In February, when I lost my job, I tried on my own for 3 weeks and I was so frustrated, because all what I found was companies, who want your money or give you points and it would take a year to get a decent amount of points.

The only one I kept was My Points. I get an e-mail, I click page end, I hit get points, as soon as the advertisement website pops up I close it and delete my e-mail. Not even a minute. I do this when I clean out my daily e-mail.

In around 4-6 weeks I get my gift card with not a lot of effort.

The only good thing in the weeks of frustration was, that I found JJ and all the MS companies. End of February until now I did around 90 jobs, not good not bad, when you think I have to replace an income of $1,500.
I'm still looking for the good MS companies. Maybe I wasn't so lucky yet because I live in a more suburb/rural area. Do get enough jobs I have to make round trips, which I only can do Fridays. Any other day I have to feed my horses at lunch and can get only the close ones.
Ahh, the survey companies. I signed up for a bunch of them in the fall of 1985. They flooded my inbox with survey opps. I learned a lot had offers. Forget about it. I learned just last year I had cash sitting in accounts which I quickly claimed. Consider:
Your 2 cents

I worked in the high tech industry and was online in 85, but your are right, the web was 95. Its probably what she meant. I tried a bunch of survey places back then, and quit it. I only earned a couple dollars and don;t think I ever even got them. I should try again now with some of these sites you all have listed.

My apology, I meant 2005. I guess I was thinking to fast. Thank you sneakers.
Internet in 85? yes.

It existed, but mostly for colleges and college users. The hardware was mostly on campuses. I was accessing the internet regularly in about 89-90, by then AOL had come out using those damn slow 28k modems. beep beep beep

Thank god for highspeed internet.

Happily shopping Rhode Island and nearby Massachusetts and Connecticut
Yes, in 1979 we were using a dial up to the ARPAnet which was run, I believe, by the DOD. In those days you had a 'dumb terminal' that was reminiscent of a teletype machine because it would print, had a keyboard and was a freestanding piece of equipment. You used it to send in your code or receive back the 'printout' of a job you ran on a remote computer. The telephone connection was via an 'accoustic coupler' that you jammed the phone receiver down into after you dialed and started hearing the connection whistles (back in the days when all phones were hard wired and had a receiver you lifted to answer them). That was a system mostly for military and for scientists working collaboratively on projects.
I used to work for the guy who invented the Arpanet at one of his later companies. One of the nicest guys I ever met.

WOW! I guess I may have intruded on someone else's thread or whatever. I was only responding to a lady who seemed to be in distress and then I see that all these "super stars" and "expert stars" and otherwise certified members have already covered the online survey field officially. Sorry ladies if I overstepped the boundaries that I didn't know had been established. I'll let you all merrily go about educating the great general public on this forum and I'll relegate myself to a passenger seat.

To all those who e-mailed me I will be answering your e -mails with the info you requested ASAP. I was inundated with requests and have gotten a little behind but I will try not to miss anyone. If I do, just write me again. I'll do al my correspondence off forum, however. So hope you hung on to my e-mail addy the first time.

Happy Day.
I don't understand why you reacted this way, duffymoon. I don't feel like you "intruded".

I think he/she confused this thread with the "Please help" thread by redpepper that was also about online or survey shops. This is a thread from 2007 that has been bumped a few times and taken a life of its own, not a response to redpepper's questions.
