Newbie Mistake

I had an oil shop this morning with a flat reimbursement/fee of $45. The guidelines said to use coupons. I forgot my coupon!

My oil changes are free at the dealership, so I really don't want to pay for one no matter what the cost. The cost would have been just under $2 without the $5 coupon.

A gentleman in the waiting area asked me if I brought my coupons. I said no and he gave me a $10 one! That was so sweet of him!

Sometimes you can find one on your phone online and show it to them and they'll give you the coupon too. I've never done it on a shop, but I've done it while not shopping. I've also just told them that I forgot my coupon at home and they've given it to me. But that was awesome that you had a buddy in the waiting area!

That was very nice of him. I am a little confused though. You did a shop for reimbursement only for a service that you would have gotten free had it not been on a shop? I'm hoping I missed something because it sounds like you spent $40 on an oil change in order to write a report so you could get your $40 back in 2 months when you could have just gone to the dealership and said hey change my oil and not spent anything. I feel fairly certain I totally missed something important.

Thanks for the info Cali! When I was filling out the shop questionnaire, there was mention of the app coupon. It wasn't mentioned in the guildelines though.

bgriffin, yes, you did miss something. I didn't mention that my son spilled rice crispies or something in the car and the oil shop vacuums the carpet, but the dealership doesn't :-D

Well that certainly makes more sense.

It worked for me! Plus, with the gentleman's kind coupon offer, I make a bit of cash in the process.

Honny, I'm interested to hear if you do get the higher amount reimbursed. One MSC I have done encourages coupon use and promises to reimburse the pre-coupon amount. They always reimburse my actual amount though, and do not reply to my inquiry later. Their way, there's no benefit in my tracking down a coupon.
Yes, my printer is frequently on the fritz (yeah, I need to get a new one), so I have used the coupon the MSC links to from my smartphone many times. It works just as well as a printed one, and I've never had any problems.

Happily shopping the Pacific Northwest. Shopping since 2013 smiling smiley
Threem, I see what you mean! Okay, I thought it was a reimbursement of $45 regardless of how much you spent. duh It's actual cost. The coupon benefits the company.

That's the way it's *supposed* to be... Yours may be a different company- Let me know what they do.
My experience has been that I put the total before coupon as the total charge, I have always been paid full reimbursement before coupon.
I stopped doing oil change shops when I bought my new car. Now I get them done at the dealership for free and it keeps my warranties in tact. My car dealership provides a free basic car wash and vacuum as a thank you at the end of each service. Now they have offered me an additional free Sirius XM Radio membership as a thank you for being a good customer. I am getting all these benefits and no report to write. Love it!
