Double billed.. let the craziness begin to get my money back!

I did a shop on the 21st. I saw in my account today that I was billed twice. I called the manager who gave me a 1-800 number. I called them. I got passed around to three different people before I ended up getting voicemail for a 4th person which I told them I was requesting a call ASAP (which I know won't happen). It's not a lot of money but it is my money. Until I get my money, I will not do another shop for them.

I am thinking maybe a hotel shop with a debit/credit card, or some other shop that you used a debit/credit card for. Maybe you can call the bank or credit card company and tell them it was double billed - they should be able to take care of it for you.
I had the same thing happen. I went online to my bank and disputed the charge. Since the amounts were the same the bank credited my account with no argument.
I used my debit card and it was charged twice. I have one receipt with the correct charge so I don't know what that is all about. It has to be a system problem on their end.
The OP said it wasn't a lot of money...I don't know of any hotel shops where there isn't a substantial amount of money involved.

If this had been done on a credit card after no more than one phone call placed to the vendor I would be having the conversation with my credit card company. I expect you can do the same with your debit card provider and save yourself a truckload of grief.
schylarsok, call the bank that issued your card. They have policies in place to address this. Make sure it's done before 60 days.

Good point, but everyone's idea of "a lot of money" is different. It could be a low cost hotel for one night and I'm not sure I would consider that amount to be "a lot of money". And I'm pretty cheap. tongue sticking out smiley

Edited to add: I do hope the OP comes back and provides an update and explains a bit more about he or she got double billed.

If the double billed amount is under $750, it will be reimbursed right away. If it's over, there will be an investigation by the bank.

It might not have been a lot of money the first time it was charged, but when they charged the same amount twice, it might be a different story smiling smiley
What are the charges for? Some things like car rentals, hotel stays, and gas purchases include a hold amount.

I stayed at a hotel last month. A second charge showed up. A day later the hotel reversed one of the charges.

If things aren't resolved after three days, then report the issue to your credit card company.

It was less than $30 but my husband is insistent I get my money back. I paid for the item as required but their registers were acting up. The associate ran my card once and it timed out. He ran it a second time. Same thing. The third try worked and I was able to pay. My receipt shows one item for the correct price. On my bank statement, the price is doubled as one transaction. IE $5.00 is $10 dollars. I'm afraid if I fuss to much, it will make me memorable and therefor unable to shop there again. On the other hand, I'd really like my money back regardless of what it does to my status.
Take it up with your bank, not the location. Tell your bank what happened (you can do it over the phone) and they will give you a provisional credit.

That happens sometimes. Based on the limited information you provided us, everyone is guessing as to what advice is appropriate. Now it sounds like you paid by Debit??? Notify your bank, they will tell you what to do. Do not assume how they handle it. Most banks require some type if signed form, some do not. Some take weeks to resolve stuff like this.

By law, banks have to address errors on debit cards immediately if the amount is under $750.

Hi, schylarsok. I'm sorry this happened to you! I worked in the cash office at a large grocery store. This sort of thing is not uncommon (computers and humans are not perfect, after all), and I do not think it will make you that memorable if you politely bring the issue up. If you went back to the hotel and explained the situation, they should have a number that they can call to request a refund (if the manager there cannot outright override it).

However, I would agree that it is probably easiest to contact your bank first. Good luck! It's never fun to suddenly have less money than you were expecting.
