Only my husband, my daughter, a couple of good friends and my CPA know I'm a mystery shopper. I have not even told my sisters. Two reasons are that I'm a little embarrassed to say I'm a mystery shopper and I'm sure those I tell would want more information. People think mystery shopping is easy, as I once did!
I have the same situation....I only do mystery shopping and participate in market research groups, surveys, interviews, etc....when someone asks "what I do," I usually shrug and say, "this and that...not much of anything."
Most often I say I'm a marketing consultant, but if I want to get "fancy" I say that I am a market intelligence field representative! ha
Generally, I do not talk about work at all. If pressed, I say that I am an Independent Contractor. If pressed further, I say that I do quality audits for customer service. If pressed further, I add that I audit customer service and business standards. I never go further than that. This response creates its own tight information loop.

You are in independent Consultant, specializing in customer relations, employee compliance, and merchandising audits.
Ha ha! You hit the nail on the head!

I tell them I'm a stay at home mom. No questions then. My husband and i keep my shopping totally quiet. We don't want competition.
Auditing Agent!!! I work professionally as a psychic, my guides came up with that one. I like it.,.
Don't be embarrassed. I had worked on an undercover project for fair housing in mn under a government agency....we found a lot of discrimination against people who were looking to rent and buy property, get approved for loans, and even just open bank accounts. It brought a lot of really positive changes..the work we do is important!! Shout it out!!!!!!
Since moving to a new city where everyone seems to know each other's business, I decided I was no longer going to talk about being a mystery shopper. So I keep it vague by telling people I work in market research. They either look puzzled or get this glazed over look in their eyes and they usually change the subject after that, lol.
I will sometimes say that I evaluate people to see if they are doing the job properly.
You could say you are an independent contractor or customer service evaluater. Of course, if you have another job you can always just use that when they ask what you do for a living. I tell people I am a substitute teacher.

"Evolve thyself and lose all hate...." Orphaned Land
I say I audit companies for quality control. Just the word "audit" makes most people cringe and change the subject.
I say I'm in Market Research. If pressed I say its a covert operation and I cannot elaborate!
I have lately picked up the title of Investigator, Field Research Agent. For awhile I was a Photographer/Writer. Mystery shoppper just leads to too many questions and speculation.

Shopping Southern Georgia, Valdosta, Waycross, Quitman, Thomasville and North Central Florida I-10 & I-75.
I like using the the title "Grunt Work", because I get paid on average $1.50/hr! When you add all the prep time, drive time, evaluation time and reporting time and then divide it by the pay. I might be off, $1.50 might be a little ambitious smiling smiley No one usually pushes for more details because they have no interest, works every time.
I call myself a Restaurant Evaluator, just because and people always say, "What fun, lucky you", and never ask anything else!

Live consciously....
I'm "CEO of my household," and do "market research consulting" on the side. It leads to interesting discussions.
I say that I do independent business customer service evaluations.

Shopping & Auditing Western Colorado, North Denver, the Central Rockies ~~~ and all stops leading to Aspen & Vail.
