Tax Preparation Shops

So, I have signed up for a tax refund transfer shop, and after reading the guidelines, it doesn't sound bad at all. (I know, famous last words). I have one question, for anyone who has ever done a tax preparation shop: How do you handle the issue of them seeing your 10-99 form from the Mystery Shop companies you work for? Doesn't that clue them in that you are possibly "shopping" them at that very moment? The guidelines don't even mention this subject.

Your 1099s don't scream "MYSTERY SHOPPER." They have the names of various companies. Unless the tax preparer was a mystery shopper himself, it's unlikely that would put 2 and 2 together.

The tax preparer doesn't even have to see your 1099's (unless your guidelines say so). I always just take a list and give the preparer the total, along with my list of Schedule C deductions.

I got an email for the same shop. I was all excited to do it until I realized that the shop required that you actually receive an income tax REFUND when you file; I haven't had a refund in years.... (sigh)

There's a couple of MSC's who do this one. One dropped their rate A LOT from what they offered last year (and they didn't even cover the entire cost to file my taxes last year so I barely came out ahead on that shop). Be aware that it may not cover the entire tax prep fee, and you do have to expect a refund to do these. I straight up tell them I am mystery shopper if they ask. The MSC cleared that.... they would not suspect you to be mystery shopping them if you're telling them you do that (and if they do ask...lie!)
