The Post Master (hazmat) wouldn't take my package, and said this...

I did a hazmat shop today and was a bit surprised by what the employee said to me...

We went through the motions, and it was my turn. Friendly woman, how are ya, rainy weather, yada yada.

When it was time to answer the question about hazmat, I let the Post Master know that I was mailing a package for my mom... she immediately replied back, "Honey, you're not supposed to tell me it's being shipped for someone else because now the postal service won't let me mail it out with all this stuff going on with things exploding in planes and people running mail scams." Errrrr... well, I do still need a book of stamps though.

Wow, sounds like you got one that is actually doing their job. I am scared to say that hasn't happened much for me.
You got one that "expanded" on her answer lol, wish i could get that on a grocery shopsad smiley
I wanted to ask her just how many planes were exploding

I had no idea you couldn't mail something on behalf of someone else.

But seriously, I think its awesome she did her job.
Nice. At least you can stock up on stamps!

Shopping the Greater Denver Area, Colorado Springs and in-between in Colorado. 33 year old male and willing to travel!
You can mail something on behalf of someone else. But when they ask you if there is anything liquid, fragile, etc. you have to say yes or no so you need to know what's in it. We are told to say we don't know what's in it. If you don't know what's in it then you can't answer the hazmat question so you can't ship it.

I have ridiculous amounts of stamps. grinning smiley I've resorted to selling at near cost online to recoup extra money. I have hundreds of dollars worth piled up on me.

Not that I want to hijack your thread, but funny marginally-related story-
My 16 year old had to mail in a check to register for drivers ed today. He had absolutely no idea how to address an envelope or where to put the stamp. It’s literally his first time mailing something.
I have a feeling that the USPS is not long for this world. We use maybe 1 stamp a month around here.

I had a new co-worker who was fresh out of secondary school and had no clue how to write a check. He had gotten as far as the date before coming to ask for help. Now, we all make goof-ups and only know as much as we are taught, but I couldn't believe they weren't teaching this in school any longer. My high school had a section in our English class where we learned a few life skills such as check writing, money orders, simple ledgers, and what types of paperwork we would need to open a bank account (you woulda figured it would be in the math class). It's also weird, but my history class taught us what we would need to take to the DMV/courthouse to register to vote, pay taxes & registration fees, and apply for a license if we hadn't taken drivers ed. (Our parents could help with this too)

I graduated high school decades ago and never had any of those classes or topics either.

In my day we had to learn all that on the streets.

I'm a little green, I suppose. I graduated in 2007 from a high school in Southern, WV. But at the time, that was all part of the curriculum. When I went to college in Kentucky, I can't recall any type of "lifeskills" in any of my coursework. Thank goodness for the Google box in some regards.

I heard that the price of stamps might be going up to 060 cents. Might to stock up on those stamps

Yes, I heard that on the news too.
Time to stock up on the 49 cent ones. Don't take all my hazmats please. But seriously I suddenly have a need to send out a bunch of thank you cards..real ones, not ecards. I am now so happy to have all those stamps.
My niece who was 18 at the time did not know how to use the yellow pages to look up a car mechanic. My sister explain to her daughter that she needed to find a mechanic for her car. My niece is now 30 years old.
I had a class in junior high that taught us how to write checks and balance a checkbook, life skills (at the time). Interestingly enough, the internet was relatively new at the time so the class also taught us how to use the net, chat rooms, etc.
Back to the original post--I do think it's kind of hilarious that if you say you're mailing for someone else, they won't take it. Do they think that terrorrists wouldn't lie about stuff like that?

It's as if at TSA screening-- if they ask you "Are you a terrorrist?" and you said No, and they just let you on the plane, because no one with bad motives ever lies or anything.

I'm guessing it's probably not just about terrorist-type explosives. The PO has to know if there's anything that could cause any sort of problem. My local PO was evacuated a week or 2 ago due to fumes from some sort of "unknown" chemical spill - that turned out to be nail polish remover that spilled. Had they known what was in the box, I'm guessing they would've handled the package better, and then it wouldn't have been such an issue.
I have not written a check in several years but when I did I had my own pen with me. I did not have to borrow anybodys.
I'm doing some of these hazmat shops tomorrow. If we get turned down and have to buy stamps ect, how much can we buy for reimbursement? The guidelines say 4 pack of stamps...can we buy a book of stamps or does it have to be only 4? I've never been able to get an answer on this from a scheduler. Thanks!
You can buy a book . I got all the stamps for my daughter's wedding, shower invites and thank yous from these shops. Very nice. It's up to the reimbursement amount 10.00? I think.

Did the hazmat shop yesterday, the clerk asked if there was any perfume and I said yes. She then asked how much it weighed. I said I don't know maybe 8 ounces of perfume and another bottle of lotion, was two 6 ounce Bath and Bodyworks lotion and gel soaps. I didn't remember seeing anything that said how much we were supposed to say it weighs in the instructions. Evidently you can't send over 10 ounces of perfume or they wont ship it priority because she just shipped it regular priority.. +My question is where do you find a bottle of perfume over 10 ounces and how much does that cost. Just the partial ounce of my favorite was almost $100.
Must say 16 oz in one I lost on......

I have spent up to the entire $11 reimbursement without issues. I emailed a scheduler once and she said to that a book of stamps was close to the reimbursement but that they get reimbursed without issue but that it was only up to $11 and they wouldn't reimburse more. That was the reply at the time. The guidelines "suggest" without actually stipulating as a requirement but a purchase MUST be made. I'm sure they like less reimbursement money spent.

I tested the waters and so far no issues. I will often add on a book of 1 cent or 20 cent stamps. I don't mind to pay just a little over to get a full reimbursement and a tad extra for what I need. When mailing letters, it's $0.21 extra cent per the next ounce up so the stamps come in handy smiling smiley I've only done this twice but no problems. I usually get a book of stamps or a few rolls or tape but with Kroger shops, I am stocked up on tape now grinning smiley

Yikes, I told her two bottles about 8 ounces perfume and lotion in each so maybe it will pass. If not, I haven't had any denied before so not sure what happens. I guess I am paying for my ex-daughter-in-law to have a relaxing night!
