What do you tell your intimates and your associates that you do?

I live in a small town, and most of us commute to nearest towns. I'm thinking of "consultant" or "auditor." What I don't want to do is announce that I mystery shop. I need a ready job title that keeps people at bay while describing that I have a job.

You could say that you do market research. If pressed for details, you simply say that you are not at liberty to discuss this because the information is still being gathered, the results are being finalized, or you will let them know when the results are published (and never tell them anything else). Sign up with merchandising companies. Then you can say that you work in merchandising.

I don't tell them. My closest friends and my family knows what I do. Not many other people do. Oddly enough I find that it's not a question that comes up very often.

My close friends and family know what I do. They respect to not to try to invade my terroritory and ask for my sources too. They do much appreciate the nice, fancy dinners or nice stay-cations. Sometimes I'll have one of my friends flight out and meet me whenever I shop out of state to partake in the boujee activities.

I say I work for a market research company. It is just too hard to explain to people plus I don't want the competition.
I tell people I'm not close with that I work with different companies, specializing in Customer Aquisition and Retention. Like a consultant. People that I'm really close to know what I do for real. Strangers (and people I meet while working) get whatever my scenario of the moment is. Sometimes I just don't want to explain anything and I just say I'm a stay at home mom. Then I get funny looks when people find out my kids are 17 and 18 and Seniors in High School, lol.
Even with friends and family, you have to be careful. I find that they begin telling their friends and suddenly everyone wants information. I quit telling anyone information when I suggested to a relative out of state that she shop for extra money and she in turn told a friend back in my town about opportunities... and caused that person to begin picking up things in my town. I know, the person could have found out on their own but it's frustrating to offer people $$$$ and they're like, nah, I'd rather tell others so you don't get as much tongue sticking out smiley

I used to tell people I work online most of the time and let them draw their own assumptions. I occasionally said that I do market research, auditing, and photo checks. Most people don't ask but occasionally someone wants to know where I work. I do have a regular job again now so that's what I tend to say. My 80 year old grandparents know what I do and my parents who rarely get on the internet or use the phone....

My family (except daughter) think I'm retired totally would not understand this, and i don't want questions.
Two close friends know and go on dinners with me, but not really interested in details, just the free meals.
I've told people i want to think I'm working pare time I am a Evaluator for business, mainly restaurants, they
think it fun and great. No one really wants details about another's business.

Live consciously....
I have a 9 to 5 job so if asked what I do for a living, I always give that as the answer. My husband and kids know that I MS and if I have a restaurant or FF shop, I take one of them with me. I have only told one close friend that I MS . I think it is better for me to just keep it to these few people.
Mystery shopping is not my primary mode of income. However, it is listed as "customer experience consulting" on my resume.
As a stay at home mom, I think most people are relieved I'm not trying to sell them a garbage lipstick, leggings, candle or whatever the latest pyramid/ MLM scheme is. I tell who I feel close with what I do, but I did get tired of everyone I told saying they wanted to do it, then showing zero follow through. It sounds glamorous, as you all know, but you also know the hours involved to write up all the fun afterwards!

My close friends/coworkers and my kids know what I do. For others, I tell them I have a side business that involves market research and writing reports.
@ShopSouthTexas Could you imagine if this industry was run like a MLM?? We'd either all be very rich or very very poor.

Seriously, nobody cares that you're offended.
@Hoju ahhhhh I do have to say my husband has a cousin that is killing it in the lipstick craze. Got a Lexus SUV and makes in a month what most people make in a year. Had I not known her personally, I wouldn't believe it was even possible. I figured all testimonials were made up!
