The paperwork guidelines (at least in my area) definitely say that they allow a reimbursement for tips on CARRYOUTs. This is very new because it has been only delivery that they allow reimbursement for a $2 tip. I wonder if this is mistake in the online form?......OR have they really changed the policy and now allow tip reimbursement for carryout shops too? I DON'T KNOW THE ANSWER because I have asked the scheduler 3x and still have not got a response. Anybody can shed some "for sure" light on this? Thanks. (I don' trust the guidelines as -- it has been wrong before.)

PS: Sometimes I wonder if the employees are fishing for mystery shoppers.......I have gotten my garlic container flipped over upside down on several occasions.. why would they put it in upside down?.... unless maybe they often see the pizza picture after the shop and can recognize small changes in the pizza? Ok... a little paranoid but I admit I flip right side up again EVEN THOUGH you are not supposed to touch anything. (I dont think this act defeats the "spirit" of what PJ are trying to monitor- you are free to disagree. PJ does not ask about which side of the garlic cup was up.) ..............and there is no reason to flip a garlic tub that makes sense unless they are hopping to see that same picture later and will know it was ME. PJ is well known for outing shoppers (as I have been in the past) so I am careful with these shops. I also recommend using different phone numbers when calling in an order. Jeeez, do shoppers have a BOUNTY on their heads at PJ?

The answer to your last question: at some locations, I think yes.

Cool about the tips for carryouts. I always give $1 tip for carryouts regardless unless something went wrong when I picked it up. The carryout people remember it and remember me, and if they think I am the shopper they sure aren't letting on, LOL. If it's on the form, stands to reason you should get reimbursed.

I've done a couple of those shops now with the $2 tip for the carryout. I was happy that they included it in the guidelines, because I would normally give a small tip.

I should have added that both of my reports were accepted, and they were from two different MSPs (two different Papa John's locations, as well).

You are over-thinking this and you are NOT supposed to touch the cup or the pepperoncini in the box. It does not matter if it's upside down, leaking, absent or crooked. Take your pictures just as you find the pizza condiments.

The photos that you take should be accurate, without any adjustments made by the shopper. It is not up to the shopper to decide what is important or not in a photo.

I was somewhat certain that with the old company, I was outted. Guess it was my orders. When I received my pizza for delivery the very last time, it had 4 cups of garlic and 3 peppers in there. I don't particularly care for either :/ Or maybe they recognized the address and thought I was cute. I dunno....

My guidelines have had a tip reimbursement on carryout as long as I've done them. (Couple years)

I believe there used to be as many as four (maybe more) companies who did the Papa Johns shops in different regions. I'm in a state that has many border states -- I was shopping for three different companies at one point within a half hour of each other.

The now defunct MSC did not reimburse a tip for carryout.

For those of your who order carryout pizzas (not shops), do you tip for carryout? I've never heard of that. I always tip for delivery, but those that work the register and bake the pizza get paid a regular salary, don't they?

Even if they get paid salary, hourly, etc., why should that influence us to tip or not?

In short, I don't tip carry-out's, unless my guidelines specifically state and factor that into my expense limit. On non-shops, I don't tip for carry-out's.

Why would a person even want to tip a carry-out purchase? I tip the delivery driver, which for a carry-out purchase would be me.

For the same reason that I don't tip employees at fast food places or places like Starbucks that have tip jars. If you're a server and you're making $2.10 you are pretty much working for tips. Again, why does that matter how much a customer's getting paid for you to tip or not?

A close friend of mine out in Phoenix works as a bartender/server.... She makes a measely hourly pay of like $3 an hour. Ultimately, she pulls in $300-500 a day in cash tips. Due to her decent overall salary (nearly $60,000 from JUST bartending and serving), will this influence you to tip less than 15% or none at all because they're making more than the 'average Jane?'

We're obviously going to have to agree to disagree. A server who is making $2.10 will get a tip from me. The amount will be based on the level of service I receive. A cashier at Wendy's will not get a tip from me. They are paid at least minimum wage. Let me ask you this...do you tip at McDonald's? Do you tip the grocery store cashier? Do you tip at a pet food store? The librarian at the library who checks out a book for you? Throughout college I worked at various retail stores (TJ Maxx, Home Goods, Macys, Wendys) and never did I even expect to get a tip. Why should I?

You’re missing my point completely. Do you tip your valet? If you’ve ever had a facial, massage or haircut, do you tip or no?

My point is your tip shouldn’t be based on how much they make or if they’re on a typical server’s hourly wage.

I don't use valet. I tip my hairstylist because she rents her space from the salon. My money, my choice.

Right, because if you’re provided services for other services for say a self-employed tax consultant, you’ll probably tip them too because they’re renting space for their office, if they have one. Or maybe your doctor, if they’re on their own and running their own practice. Gotta tip them too because they have to rent their equipment and office space out!

Sure, your money, your choice. I just don’t understand the logic; that’s all.
