Restaurant didn't give itemized receipt

In certain situations, that is very simple to do. However, since I am not able to disclose the business this occurred at, the circumstances are different than those you have experienced.

I remove the itemize receipt and take a picture of it, just in case...

I had a server DEMAND the itemized receipt back - she said that was the ONLY way should could process the payment. I was paying cash. She took the itemized receipt back (snatched it from me) and my cash and didn't return.

After xxx minutes, I was able to flag down someone else down and asked for my change back. The server said that there was no change to be returned. *insert eye roll*

I put all of that information in my report. As well as the other suspicious behavior the server was doing. (For example, taking people's coupons and then claiming the coupons were invalid. The coupons were given to the guests by the front desk.)

I was paid (thank goodness I had a habit of taking a pic of my itemized receipt as soon as i receive it).

** I also take a picture of the signed receipt - that shows how much tip I am leaving if I use a credit card - BEFORE I let the server take it. Too many times the server has changed the tip amount to give themselves more. Hard to argue something like that if I can't show my receipt...and for some reason managers to just don't believe that I wouldn't leave a $20 tip on a $5 meal. *sigh*

** I hope it works out and the OP does get paid.
Yellowflower, I get it now, you had to take a photo of the monitor showing the cost of the meal and what you ordered. That wasn't clear before. How very, very weird!!!!
In most cases the waiter can bring the itemized receipt first:I am usually take it before gave them my credit card.

Shopping Eastern Pennsylvania since 2009
Resolution: After I got home and before I started my report, I e-mailed the MSC support and explained that I didn't get the receipt back. She replied and said: try and contact the restaurant to get a copy of the receipt. I did that, and the manager e-mailed me a .pdf right away. I submitted my report and it has been approved for payment. Relief!

Lesson learned - From now on I'll snap a picture of the itemized receipt before giving it back.
Glad to hear this all worked out. This thread reminded me of a bar assignment I picked up a while back. The guidelines stated: "Please do not ask for separate checks, or checks at all for that matter."

When the time came to settle up, the bartender gave me my total verbally, then only provided the charge slips after running my card, not an itemized receipt.

The MSC rejected my report, insisting that an itemized receipt was required. I replied by citing the passage above from the guidelines, and got all sorts of garbage in response, going on about how anyone with service industry experience knows it's illegal to not provide an itemized receipt, and that it was my responsibility to make sure to get proper documentation.

I escalated to the MSC owner, explaining that it was my responsibility to follow the instructions provided. The situation was resolved, and I eventually got paid/reimbursed, but I put that MSC on my ten foot pole list.
I try to pay cash when I do a shop. There was one time I went someplace (non shop) and I used a debit card to see what kind of receipt I would get and I got a full detail receipt

Ack! I just did a restaurant shop - I got the bill, gave them my card. The bill came back to me and it only included the summary copies to sign. They removed the itemized receipt. I noticed this right away but I felt weird asking for it. Recently on a previous job, I tried to take the itemized receipt and the cashier said she needed to keep it. For this job the guidelines say they need the itemized bill to get reimbursed so I'm worried. Has anyone ever had this happen to them?

I did a shop the other day that had the same problem. I just told her she forgot my itemized receipt. I told her I needed to know what I ordered. She said no problem and got it for me. It isn't unusual to have the proper receipt for your taxes so it doesn't out you to ask.
