Aldi Debit Cards Compromised

FYI, I saw on the news last night that someone hacked into Aldi's debit card system at several stores. People are routinely getting their accounts hit for $500 or so. According to the report, the charges are being made in California.

I probably would never have shopped at Aldi except for MSing. I've shopped several stores & have almost always used my debit card. (Aldi only accepts cash & debit cards). I think I will be having new cards issued as a precaution.

We also had TJMax, Marshalls and Ross (all owned by the same corp.) accounts tapered with, and credit card # stolen....there was a lawsuit and it was settled. I shop at Marshall (before Msing) and was one whose CC # was stolen.
With so many employees that come and go, it's not a surprise to have these things happen.

In most situations you can use a debit card AS a credit card and thus give them a signature rather than a PIN number. It is the PINs that generally get compromised, so with an exception of my bank's own ATM I will never use a debit card as a debit card. (If I plan on recharging a 'gift card' I will try to use it as a credit as well, and if that doesn't work I will empty it, pitch it and get a new 'gift card' next time.)
I am not sure if Aldi gives the option of using the card as credit.
The difference being that with the credit side, the bank charges the merchant a fee and with the debit option, the bank pays the merchant a fee.
I learned this from MSing a bank, of course.
Aldi does not accept credit cards. They only take debit cards.

I very rarely use debit cards, but Aldi is one place where I often use it.
patnewman,

No, in my experience shopping there (not just mystery shopping) they accept debit cards as debit cards. In fact, I was at one store a few hours ago and used my PIN to make the transaction with my ATM card.

PS: A google search gave limited information. Specifically, at least one ALDI store in the Chicago area was compromised and people's ATM accounts were compromised. However, it wasn't clear that it was an ALDI store or stores. The investigation continues and the police weren't giving much info. The unauthorized charges were being made in CA.
